FREMONT (CBS SF) The occupants of five to six ramshackle tree houses built in a private industrial park near Stevenson Boulevard in Fremont are facing eviction.
Crews equipped with chainsaws and handsaws have begun clearing out the structures and cutting off limbs in order to make it harder to reoccupy and easier to spot the homeless who are taking refuge in the trees. They are about halfway through the long line of more than 60 eucalyptus trees.
Neighboring business owners say the first tree house went up in February and started multiplying over the next three months.
The structures vary in size, complexity and height above the ground. One is at ground level, while another is up more than 30', accessible only by a ladder with sparsely-placed rungs. Each treehouse displays a fair amount of carpentry know-how, utilizing joists to support the floor below and straps to support the structure from above. It also appears the builders have access to power tools.
Marc, who identified himself as a transient but declined to give his last name, said he has been storing his belongings in one of the tree houses for about a month.
Despite being attacked and bitten by rodents and other insects that infest the tree and inhaling fumes from a nearby wood roofing factory, he prefers the trees over the street.
I think its a good idea actually, I think its actually something that people would benefit from if we had the right knowledge of trees, said Marc.
If i were homeless I’d build myself a tree house.
I’m sure that they are already pining for their old homes. I hope they didn’t spend too much time sprucing them up.
We should be looking up to the “hicks”, who typically know how to hunt and fish, fix cars, etc.
Are we not men?
I disagree. I would live in a tree house if zoning would allow it ( like my village ). Having slept in deer stands, a tree house would be a great upgrade.
Why all the fuss over this? It keeps them off the streets...
I didn’t expect such a wooden response from you
From what I saw, it’s a knotty problem, for sure.
I was curious as to what he meant as a wood roofing factory
Giving off obnoxious fumes. Found Stevenson Boulevard on Google Maps. The high end ends in a field at 7250 Stevenson Boulevard. I was surprised to see cows grazing on the side of the road. I could not find any large trees in the area.
Never did find the roofing factory.
We had a guy who lived not far from us. He’s a patriotic veteran who lived off the grid.
Nice guy to talk with. He lived in an old block shack on a few acres, The landowner called him the caretaker. His house was sided with US flags.
When the landowner decided to build apartments, he set up Eugene in an apartment. He has a small car detailing business.
I never described him as homeless, more like a productive guy living off the grid in town
It started as a lark, but quickly turned into a larch.
The homeless are causing tree deaths. Which side should a liberal be on?
“Off the grid” is more accurate, I think.
ranting about a sheriff, reeking of smoked crawdads.
They’re all bark and no bite
Face Palm!
Yeah, it’s all fun and giggles, until someone empties their chamber pot...........
Real men live in a lean-to.
