e Pen Triumphs Over Macron in EU Election Exit Poll, Calls for Fresh National Elections

Populist leader Marine Le Pen and her Rassemblement National (National Rally, or RN) have triumphed over sitting French president Emmanuel Macron in the European Parliament elections, according to exit polls.

Ms Le Pen declared victory following exit polls showing the RN winning around 24 per cent of the vote, compared to Macron’s La Republique En Marche! (LREM) who, according to projections, has come in second with 22.5 percent of the vote, French newspaper Le Figaro reports.

Declaring victory, the RN leader said, “The trust we have been given by the French in designating us as the first party in France but especially as that of the future alternation is an immense honour.”

She went on to call for Macron to dissolve the French parliament, saying “it is up to the President of the Republic to draw the consequences” and calling for fresh elections, stating that Macron put his own presidency on the line in the vote.

Previously, Le Pen had called the European elections a referendum on the presidency of Macron and called on him to resign from office if his party were not able to win.

“So it becomes a referendum for or against Emmanuel Macron, this European election. I accept that, but in these conditions, he must do as General De Gaulle: if he loses this election, then he will have to leave,” she said earlier this month.

23-year-old Jordan Bardella, the leading European Parliament candidate for the RN, echoed Le Pen’s call for fresh parliamentary elections, declaring: “The president will not be able to govern against the interests of the French during the second half of his quinquennium, which is why we are asking him to dissolve the National Assembly.”

...stating that Macron put his own presidency on the line in the vote.

She’s right. Macron broke with precedent and decorum by weighing in on the election. Now he needs to take his medicine and step down. But of course these globalist types have no honor so we’ll see what happens.

Of course they have honor! Remember in 2016 when John Ellis Bush signed that promise to support the eventual Republican nominee and said anyone who wouldn't do that was a poopy-head? ... ohhhhh ....never mind.

I remember in the 90s when her father did well and a French colleague just about had a stroke, telling me how Le Pen was Hitler and all. I hope he’s loving this, because I sure am.

Votes? Votes mean nothing to them. Elections are the opium of the people.

Steve Bannon's crusading for his populist/nationalist views throughout Western and central Europe have clearly borne fruit. But note, the greens have also done rather well across the board.

It occurs that we see a strong tidal surge toward populism in Europe, a so-called populism of the right of the kind Bannon has been crusading for and a populism of the left perhaps represented by the surging greens. In any event it seems there is a disintegration in the center with this support leaching out to either side, but both of the recipient sides being populist. Both are populist at least in the sense that they are anti-elite, at least as elitism is identified with Brussels.

My view of populism is guarded but if I had to choose between them I would much prefer the population of the right articulated by Steve Bannon. I can understand the popularity in Germany of the greens, they are simply living in a media universe in which there is no opposition. I further note that in places like Hungary and Italy the green element is not quite so pronounced. Further, in Great Britain one must be cautious about identifying these election results as populist because the entanglement with the European Union was the overriding issue and it is not clear the support for Brexit was essentially populist at core.

Certainly populism is perhaps the vital antitoxin which must be administered to the body politic if we are to restore a semblance of constitutional conservatism to the Republic and if we are to restore a purer kind of capitalism for the benefit of all. Crony capitalism, get along quasi-socialism, and feckless leadership are leading the establishment Republican party in America toward the same fate that has befallen the Tories.

Meanwhile in the US and in Europe, the left often masquerading as greens, make the same appeal from a different direction and they can offer far more goodies from the public trough than can populist nationalists. Bannon style national populism offers more jobs through nationalist mercantilism, more tax of the rich, and less power to the elites. Greens promise more goodies through higher taxes and more government, all dressed up as democracy which legitimatizes itself as the rule of law, a concept which we conservatives regard as the rule of the mob.

We shall see.

Let’s hope that the conservatives in France denounce any antisemitism.

I suppose anti-Semitism could equally be described as bigotry against Semites of both flavors, that is, Arab or Jew but the French due not seem to be equal opportunity bigots. Their animosity to the Jews has been identifiable through the centuries, the Dreyfus affair being known to us all. The anti-Semitism of Vichy France during the war years is rather well-known.

I have been trying to figure why leftists in the Western world are turning more and more toward anti-Semitism and pro Arab sympathies. Jews have a long history of association with socialism and therefore one might assume that they would be welcomed for that reason in the ranks of leftists. History doesn't always conform to presumption, Soviet Russia was not always kind to Jews.

Jews have been and historically stiffnecked people, and in the age of leftist collectivization, anything that upholds individual integrity is to be damned.

The leftists are making common cause against the Western world with Arabs and the price of admission to that club is apparently anti-Semitism, or at least being anti-Israeli.

I concede, I am at a loss to uncover the root of its present manifestation.

Antisemitism is hatred of the Jews (not Arabs) because it is not intrinsically racial. The adversary hates the Holy One of Israel and goes about as a roaring lion seeking the ruin of souls; this is the root of its present manifestation against Israel and the Jews in the Diaspora.
