Oregon authorities are seeking a would-be thief who was armed with a hatchet when he tried to rob a convenience store, only to flee when the clerk drew a gun and called 911.
However, the clerk's quick thinking cost him his job, with the president of Plaid Pantry in Oak Grove explaining to local station KOIN-TV that the chain has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons.
He said employees are trained to de-escalate robbery situations to avoid injury, according to the station.
The Clackamas County Sheriffs Office on Friday released surveillance video of the incident which took place April 28 at the store, seeking tips in identifying the suspect who fled empty-handed and without the 12-inch hatchet.

The store chain should hang a new sign: "Robbers welcome - we don't want our employees to injure you", in between the "EBT welcome here" and "Lotto tickets for sale".
ROFL!!!!
Who figured this thread would have the funniest comments of the day? :)
Let the President of the organization try to deescalate the situation.
Managers clearly don’t understand that clerks risk their lives for minimum wage. Screw that. Better that you lose your job than your life.
Based on my personal experience, the sound of a 12 ga racking instantly de-escalates a situation.
So in Oregon and this employer it would have been much better if this employee were mortally wounded IDIOTS!!!
Plenty of help wanted signs in Oregon. Also plenty of quick mart employees being killed by robbers. Any employee not packing is a fool.
And, yes, Oregon is full retard.
If somebody gives you an answer are you going to get mad about it?
Whipping out a pistol de-escalates better than jaw-jaw.
The employee should immediately file suit for endangerment by his employer for failing to provide adequate security.
It’s a convenience store where you sit down for a nice cup of hot chocolate and talk to the proprietor about healthcare.
Invaded by Californians in the early seventies.
I think it is time to let everyone know Plaid Pantry does not care about the lives of its employees or customers.
Hatchet wielding robbers need not worry about being confronted. They know employees will be fired if they interfere with robberies.
I would like to see how the President de-escalates the situation after an axe is planted in his skull.
De-escalation is not appropriate when you are faced with deadly force.
==> ...the president of Plaid Pantry...

If it says Plaid Pantry, I’m doing business elsewhere.
The term is “Californicated”. The term appeared years ago during an election cycle, as in “Don’t Californicate Oregon”.
We lost
I think they mean de-escalating the robbery by catching the robbers hatchet with your face. There is no more conflict after that happens.
They don't tell the victim's family anything. They have their legal department or HR draft a generic letter stating how sad they are. They do nothing more.
I'd say the situation was 100% "de-escalated" by the gun. Freaking morons. Would they have been happy to see their employee with an ax in his head?
