Shackled but Not Silent

Bible in a Year: 1 Chronicles 25–27; John 9:1–23

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25

In the summer of 1963, after an all-night bus ride, US civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and six other black passengers stopped to eat at a diner in Winona, Mississippi. After law enforcement officers forced them to leave, they were arrested and jailed. But the humiliation wouldn’t end with unlawful arrest. All received severe beatings, but Fannie’s was the worst. After a brutal attack that left her near death she burst out in song: “Paul and Silas was bound in jail, let my people go.” And she didn’t sing alone. Other prisoners, restrained in body but not in soul, joined her in worship.

According to Acts 16, Paul and Silas found themselves in a difficult place when they were imprisoned for telling others about Jesus. But discomfort didn’t dampen their faith. “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” (v. 25). Their bold worship created the opportunity to continue to talk about Jesus. “Then they spoke the word of the Lord to [the jailer] and to all the others in his house” (v. 32).

Most of us will not likely face the extreme circumstances encountered by Paul, Silas, or Fannie, but each of us will face uncomfortable situations. When that happens, our strength comes from our faithful God. May there be a song in our hearts that will honor Him and give us boldness to speak for Him—even in the midst of trouble.

By Arthur Jackson

Reflect & Pray

When was the last time you found yourself in a difficult situation? How did God help you live out your faith and witness?

Hard times call for prayer and praise to the One who controls all things.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

“BLUES IN THE NIGHT”

Early in 1941, Harold left MGM for Warner Brothers and was assigned to work with Johnny Mercer on a film titled “Hot Nocturne.” Of particular importance was a scene where the hero is tossed into jail with his friends, and a black man in a nearby cell sings the blues. Harold wanted to come up with something musically strong and worthy of a fine voice, so he locked himself in his study and analyzed recordings of the blues. After two days, he emerged with a melody. Johnny, upon hearing it, began inventing lyrical ideas that quickly covered four pages. Harold admired Johnny’s work and suggested only one change – that a line appearing on the fourth page be placed at the beginning. The line was “My mamma done tol’ me...” and the song became “Blues in the Night.” Jack Warner liked it enough to retitle the film.

This weekend is dedicated to a song that became a standard overnight. Every singer worth his salt has put an individual brand on this classic.

This is what it looked and sounded like in the 1941 movie. The dialogue characterizes it as “New Orleans blues,” but Johnny Mercer came from Savannah with its own musical traditions.

Good evening, Publius, and thank you for Rachmaninov’s “The Star Spangled Banner”.

Is your place hot yet? We are pushing 60 most days lately...it would be great sitting out on the deck weather, but not much sun.

So far we’ve had the coldest May on record. Today it finally edged on 90, but we’re going to be back in the 80s until sometime after Memorial Day. Then it’s 90s as usual.

“BLUES IN THE NIGHT”

This was an era when everybody piled onto a hit song in the recording studio. Benny gave it a genuine bluesy touch, but what made this recording so valuable is that it featured the young, unknown Peggy Lee, who was to become a giant in jazz. This is down and dirty, and her vocal imitation of Benny playing the clarinet is somewhere between insane and wonderful.

Benny Goodman & Peggy Lee: “Blues in the Night”

This is a later interpretation in a video clip from 1957.

“BLUES IN THE NIGHT”

Decades before MTV, there were “soundies,” films of artists that were played on a kind of Moviola jukebox. Only a few survive, but this one from 1941 shows what a live performance would look like.

This 1941 recording is surprisingly good. As a rule you don’t associate Judy with something like this, especially this early in her career, but she delivers.

Swing? Jazz? It’s somewhere in between, and Woody always had a hard-edged sound.
