A couple of months ago, I posted this write-up here which points out that Richard Bissell Jr. (CIA Director of Plans) was the first cousin (once removed) of Robert Swan Mueller III. (FYI – “removed” is the cousin of a parent. Robert Swan Mueller’s mother, Alice Mueller nee Truesdale, had a sister named Marie Truesdale. Marie Truesdale married Richard M. Bissell Sr. There son, Richard M. Bissell Jr. is therefore the first cousin of Alice Truesdale Mueller, and the first cousin (once removed) of Robert Swan Mueller III.
The Truesdales and the Bissells are names that are often associated with “Eastern Establishment” families. More famous Eastern Establishment names include the Rockefellers, Morgans, Vanderbilts and duPonts, among others. Other often heard names include the Harriman, Bush/Walkers, Cabot, Lodge, Weld, Symington and Delano.
The Truesdale family acquired its Eastern Establishment credentials via William Haynes Truesdale (1851-1931) who was President of Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DLW). Many of the existing NJ Transit rights-of-way from the ‘burbs into NYC were originally developed by the DLW, or Delay, Linger and Wait, as NJ Commuters used to call it.
The Bissell Family were early settlers in the Hartford Connecticut area.

The Internet gets a lot of things wrong.
If you start researching Robert Mueller’s resume, eventually your search results will turn up a few links that say Robert Swan Mueller III (or his wife) is the child of General Charles P. Cabell, or the uncle, or some other close relationship. Except by marriage, Robert Mueller is not closely related to Charles P. Cabell or his brother Earle (Mayor of Dallas when JFK was killed.) It was this incorrect information that led me to the discovery of the closer Mueller/Bissell relationship.
The Cabell’s are another Eastern Establishment Family. They were early settlers in Virginia, were instrumental in the War for Independence (as Statesmen and Soldiers) and seemed to have a General in every US war from 1800 on.
The Cabells are also numerous and widespread with some branches moving west to St. Louis and Texas and others staying in Virginia. Robert Mueller’s wife, Ann Cabell Standish of the St. Louis branch is distantly related to Charles and Earle Cabell of the Texas Branch. Ann Cabell and the brothers, would probably considered 3rd or 4th cousins once or twice removed.
While the “blood” relationship between the Muellers and Texas Cabells is relatively distant, despite what the Internet says, they most certainly traveled in the same social circles and appear to have summered with each other on a small Island in the Chesapeake developed specifically as a retreat for many of the elite families that profited immensely from the United States entry into World War I.
Gibson Island, just south of Annapolis, is one of those Islands that the wealthy congregated on, built huge summer cottages, and kept out the “rif-raf.” Think Jupiter Island or Jeckyll Island, or Kennebunkport. William Stuart Symington is credited with the initial development of Gibson Island after WWI, selling parcels to members of the Rockefeller family, the Walkers, the Pearres and Robert Swan Mueller III grandfather, Robert Swan Mueller Sr. (2)
By the start of WW2, there were probably less than 50 families on Gibson Island. “Manly” activities centered around the Yacht Club and Golf Club. The ladies played golf or planned and hosted summer cotillions, garden parties and a summer carnival at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Chapel. The Mueller and Cabell connection is a little less tenuous with the planning of the 1937 church carnival and Gibson Island in general. Although Charles P. Cabell (later General and CIA Deputy Director) was born and raised in the Dallas area, his parents apparently felt close enough to his other Virginia relatives, to give him the middle name “Pearre.”
No one is alleging the Mueller family is part of the same Bissell/Cabell contingent that had something to do with the assassination of JFK. It may be just coincidence that they are related, or at least traveled in the same elite circles. Beyond Bissell and Cabell though, the Mueller’s circle of near and distant relatives include the Cushings (Diplomats and Congressman), the Child family (Julia Child, Chef, OSS agent and other CIA connections) the Astors and the Prudhommes (World Bank; Hector Prudhomme helped implement the 1953 CIA Iranian Coup to install the Shah.)
Although not apparently related, Godfrey Rockefeller would certainly have been at least an acquittance of the Mueller’s, as a resident of Gibson Island, as well as colleague of Michael Paine (husband of Ruth Forbes Paine, Marina Oswald’s “friend”) when Godfrey was the Chief Pilot of Bell Helicopter from the 50s to early 70’s, and Michael worked there for his step father. Cross-training or getting “foreign” jump badges and such, isn’t particularly unusual. Lots of folks want the Ranger tab, it is definitely a resume enhancer. It makes for some double takes during dress uniform inspections. A buddy of mine was prior service in the Marine Corps, and was authorized to wear his ribbons earned on the Army uniform, some of them are just different, and “WTF is that ribbon”? was common. Lots of guys liked to earn the German marksmanship deal if stationed in Europe, it was this big rope lookin deal.

Not unusual. Especially Marines attending jump school — which is literally run by the Army for all the services. A few Marines can apply and be accepted to Ranger School. I recall seeing a Marine NCO competing in the “Top Ranger” Challenge(or whatever it’s actually called) where competitors pair off to compete.
Mueller was a 2nd Lt. and infantry platoon leader in the marines. Until recently no one has claimed he was doing covert ops in Vietnam. This looks like a conspiracy theory that was created to sell books to me.
Oh you are talking about Operation Phoenix A.K.A. Phoenix Program. gotcha. If Mueller was working as a CAI operative in Vietnam then he probably was involved, but as far as I know he was A Marine only.

That is rather fascinating, though I only skimmed it.
James Fennimore Cooper wrote a book called The Spy.
That was primarily about a spy (possibly double-agent?) during the Revolutionary War. Said spy was saved from execution by G Washington in the story.
Some history buffs could possibly fill in more of the blanks. My point is that there has been this kind of function in USA from the beginning. And it is SUPPOSED to be under control of the President. Not the other way around.

This is a really cool thread here . I’ve always been interested in connecting the dots with these people and have done some research. One book I highly recommend is “The Devil’s Chessboard” Allen Dulles,the CIA and the Rise of Aerica’s Secret Government by David Talbot pub. 2015.
I don’t believe Mueller’s name is mentioned at all but I’ll bet there are some individuals in this very interesting book that crossover into the Mueller , etc... circle jerk.

Kennebunkport is not historically a wealthy enclave, the Walker cottage, now an estate notwithstanding. While there is some old wealth, most of Kennebunkport is working folks and lobstermen. More recently there has been a building boom of large home both on the water and inland. They generally sit next to more modest homes that have been family owned for generations.
My job involves visiting construction sites and other development work with KPort being part of my territory. I am constantly amazed at finding simple little homes in the woods with a megamansion just down the street.
