Nos. 44 and 45 broke the mold. What does that mean for the future of the presidency?

For more than two centuries, until the election of 2008, American presidents all looked alike. They were white and male and every one of them came to office with experience in the government, military or both. Barack Obama, the first African American president, broke one mold. Donald Trump, who had neither military nor government experience, broke the other.

In their own ways, Obama and Trump were two of the most unlikely people ever elected to the presidency, raising the question of whether voters in America are using a new lens through which to judge the qualities and qualifications of presidential aspirants. Trump’s presidency continues that experiment, as does the competition among the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to oppose him in 2020.

Bob Tyson is a retired database consultant who lives in Chapel Hill, N.C. He is a Trump supporter and says the president has helped change his thinking about the qualities needed for someone to hold the nation’s highest office.

“Having that celebrity personality and projecting an image in the media is more important than traditional qualifications,” he said. “It’s made me think differently about what it takes to be elected president. The traditional path of being a state governor or U.S. senator doesn’t seem to count as much. It’s being able to manage your image in the media and galvanizing your base.”

Will and Wendy Keen were in the audience at the Big Grove Brewery and Taproom in Iowa City a few weeks ago, awaiting the arrival of former vice president Joe Biden. They have been making what Will called “a diligent effort to connect with each of the candidates” campaigning in their state.

One person who has caught their eye is South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a candidate who, at age 37 and the leader of...

#44 broke the record for mendacity and incompetence.
#45 went all the way in the other direction.

The pendulum swings back and forth in this land of ours. Celebrity is now all the rage and will be increasingly so.

God help us in the future.

The mold was broken in 1992. Before that, presidential candidates felt obligated to maintain an image — even a phony one — of authority, strength, and decency. Bill Clinton was the first candidate who wasn’t just a highly defective misfit, but wasn’t even embarrassed about it.

"Barack Obama, the first African American president, broke one mold. Donald Trump, who had neither military nor government experience, broke the other."

Trump did attend New York Military Academy, so he did have exposure to military tradition. And Obama had no military experience either. And it could be debated Mr. "Voting Present" didn't have much political experience either.
So much misdirection in those two sentences.

Since Oboogaloo broke the nationality barrier and supported the ‘rights’ of those with a different sexual orientation, I propose that I, a Canadian who identifies as an ‘attack helicopter’, would be a perfect candidate to be #46!

I think more than anything, Trump has revolutionized the Presidency. Have we ever had a President who was more direct, who’d go out and attack people in Hollywood and in the media so ruthlessly? IMO, Trump is the first futuristic President. Space Force, implementing new trade agreements and using Twitter to make statements...what other President would have done this?

#46 will be Pence, and he will break yet another mold!

What does that mean for the communist media? They may find they get the opposite of what they were hoping for.

I hope you’re wrong about Pence. That guy will never be elected President, so the only way he becomes #46 is if Trump doesn’t complete a term in office.

Honestly, Trump's a one-off. After 2024, I fear we're right back to the two party, back slapping, rip-off-the-people, business as usual.

Random milquetoast GOP governor (who is also "literally Hitler" for a year) loses the election amicably to leftist figurehead global Marxist democrat.

Eight years later the parties flip-flop, but everybody in politics suddenly has $100 million dollars when they leave office.

Treasure that feeling. Once he is out of office, we’ll never feel anything like it again. These are the days, my friend. Enjoy them while they last. Dance as fast as you can.

Trump isn’t breaking “the mold”. He has to clean up the mess caused by the globalist presidents Bush through Obama.

Exactly.

Pence will NEVER be president. Period. Trump saved him by picking him as VP, he was gonna lose because he made the LGBT people angry.

DeSantis will lose to a Harris or someone. DeSantis was called racist last year against Gillum, he will be smeared nationally as he gets his George Allen moment.

After Trump, it is back to normal. In 2020 or 2024.

#46 will NEVER be Pence. Or DeSantis. Or Cotton. Period.

#46 will probably be Kamala Harris or Gavin Newsom.

Period.
