CNN: Trump unveils new (likely doomed) immigration plan

President Donald Trump announced a broad plan to reform border security and legal immigration during a speech on Thursday afternoon, but the proposal faces an uphill battle for consensus even among the Republican Party's own ranks. And Democrats are sure to oppose it as it fails to address key issues.

Trump said the plan provides a "clear contrast" with other proposals he's deemed unsatisfactory. "Democrats are proposing open borders, lower wages, and frankly, lawless chaos," he said in the Rose Garden. "We are proposing an immigration plan that puts the jobs, wages and safety of American workers first."

"Our proposal is pro-American, pro-immigrant and pro-worker," he said, before laying out some of his proposal.

There hasn't been clear buy-in from Republicans on Capitol Hill on the plan spearheaded by Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, and even within the White House, there are divisions over how to approach immigration policy, though one administration official disputes that.

A senior Republican familiar with internal and external White House discussions told CNN that while some at the White House, such as Trump's immigration adviser, Stephen Miller, want to focus the West Wing's efforts mostly on border security issues, others, such as Kushner, say they are willing have a broader approach. This broader approach is likely to eventually include using the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to strike a deal with Democrats, the source said.

Trump's Thursday event also served as another opportunity to press his case for the building of his long-sought US-Mexico border wall and rally his base with the hardline rhetoric against illegal immigration that has marked his campaign trail speeches. The senior Republican source also questioned how conservatives will convince Democrats, who control of the House of Representatives, to come to the negotiation table.

Is it as doomed as your attempted coup?

I wouldn’t be throwing that word around too casually, CNN.

The plan would also implement a point-based system for visas, which would take into account age, English proficiency, offers of employment and educational/vocational certifications.

"Educational certifications" like degrees from Indian diploma mills? What an anti-American scam.

No bias in that headline...

Nope.

The worse thing in the world is to be born a white second or third generation American. I would say they are second class citizens but that would be a step up. Actually they are invisible.

I'm not voting for a continued flood of legal immigrants, regardless of their alleged skill level.

Then make sure you vote for open borders in 2020.

Legal immagration is the hill to die on only by people wanting to show off rather than recognize the battlefield they are on.

He could come up with the secret for eternal life and CNN would broadcast it as: “Trump finds way to continue taxing people forever”.

Doomed because Congress doesn’t want to do crap about the immigration issue. Been that way for decades and will probably continue for decades more.

In the hundreds of postings here in Free Republic rarely is this brought up. It’s Known As Reciprocity. We should be treating anybody illegally crossing the Mexican border into the US the way the Mexican’s do Any American illegally .crossing into Mexico. No free lawyer Entry denied heavy fine and possible imprisonment. before getting kicked out.

It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegally exempting those who do so legally and meet US citizenship requirements.

Because of those Mexican constitutional requirements a US citizen besides not being able to vote,a lso cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. And until that is changed the US and the affected state should consider making that reciprocal. Prohibiting any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges fully enforced .In other words Sneak into this country before expulsion no job no voting no landowning ..

Do you mean more or less immigration?
