SAT to Give Students ‘Adversity Score’ to Capture Social and Economic Background
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 16, 2019 | Douglas Belkin

Posted on 05/16/2019 3:10:29 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The College Board plans to assign an adversity score to every student who takes the SAT to try to capture their social and economic background, jumping into the debate raging over race and class in college admissions.

This new number, called an adversity score by college admissions officers, is calculated using 15 factors including the crime rate and poverty levels from the student’s high school and neighborhood. Students won’t be told the scores, but colleges will see the numbers when reviewing their applications.

Fifty colleges used the score last year as part of a beta test. The College Board plans to expand it to 150 institutions this fall, and then use it broadly the following year.

How colleges consider a student’s race and class in making admissions decisions is hotly contested. Many colleges, including Harvard University, say a diverse student body is part of the educational mission of a school. A lawsuit accusing Harvard of discriminating against Asian-American applicants by holding them to a higher standard is awaiting a judge’s ruling. Lawsuits charging unfair admission practices have also been filed against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California system.

The College Board, the New York based nonprofit that oversees the SAT, said it has worried about income inequality influencing test results for years. White students scored an average of 177 points higher than black students and 133 points higher than Hispanic students in 2018 results. Asian students scored 100 points higher than white students. The children of wealthy and college-educated parents outperformed their classmates.

“There are a number of amazing students who may have scored less [on the SAT] but have accomplished more,” said David Coleman, chief executive of the College Board.

America is basically now a very FAILED idea. We have essentially lost the REAL Cold War. Sure,USA won militarily and economically but Marxism infiltrated our society at every foundational level behind the scenes.

Liberal Arts Colleges, excepting Hillsdale College and Liberty University, are pretty much worthless.

Students are subjected to socialist/communist indoctrination and are not taught critical analysist. Their degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on!

Engineering Schools are currently still sources for a valid education, but the left is trying to dilute them as well.

I agree but what we have now is fascism, corporate globalists calling the shots and the leftists doing their thing too. There is very little friction between them. It is us ‘normals’ caught in the middle that is the problem.

This should be challenged in court—immediately.

Exceptions for "affirmative action" hold blacks and hispanics back from reaching their maximum potential. They never have to be as good as everyone else to meet their goals.

We're living in Idiocracy, have been for decades.

So sorry. Imitating the Governor of Virginia would require you to sell your soul and become a Democrat, a price a bit too high just to get the press off your back.

Back when I was in HS, girls were put on a percentile score that separated their scores from guys. I got a 99%ile for women on the Math SAT, and never had to take it seriously.

The GRE, more was demanding (no bogus percentiles), and I got a decent raw score.

How do minorities and others of the "less advantaged" ever know what their true potential is if they never need to achieve it?

‘Adversity Score’

They should just call it 'diversity' score and be done with it. Do they really think they are fooling anyone? The only ones getting fooled are the less than stellar students they are 'helping'.

“My emails are inundated with admissions officers who want to talk to our diversity kids,” Mr. Conroy said.

Imagine going through your college years, and beyond, with "Diversity Kid!" stamped on your forehead.

One of the alphabet networks did a cloying story about needing more black male doctors as positive role models. An incoming medical student actually admitted on TV he had to take the entrance exam FOUR times (the MCAT, I assume) to finally get admitted to Morehouse School of Medicine.

And patients are supposed to believe that he is equivalent to someone who aces college and the MCAT? No thanks. If he makes it through med school, it’ll be with constant pampering, lower standards, and plenty of free tutoring. Yet he’ll still get the M.D. after his name.

Systematic oppression in the name of fairness. Based on where you live, we assume you have privilege. And it is a simple score that counts against you like a FICO score; the institutions simply exclude you if you don’t fit their criteria.

No matter that your parents were divorced and unemployed but still live in the same house. System downgrades you if you live with grandma in good school district because Mom is in prison and Dad is missing (a kid down the street from us).

bum down the road, lived on welfare from one or more “parents” and they dealt crack and meth and didn’t get caught, thereby increasing their “score adjustment factor” by ADDING to the terrible “crime ridden” suffering environment they “grew up” in, disadvantaged as such.

Crack whores— preferential SAT scores. Societal handicapping.

So, will they decide horse races by “adjusting” the background of the horse.

This is beyond crazy— and watch what it will do to the college “intelligence” ratings. This is so these same colleges can accept ever more fedgov money for the “downtrodden” subgroups, any one of whom could be another “shadow” student..... like the “genius” obamaumao (whose academic record is still sealed, but who is said to be— SAID to be brilliant. NOT!)

Exactly— track sports competitors who are “advantaged” by training, background and.... ability, are required to have ankle weights attached to them— in order to make the race more “fair” for lesser athletes.

Vonnegut, a socialist, swerved into a socialist/utopian inequity and classic tactic of the left===

Equality of OUTCOME determined by the State! Equal stupidity, and equal MISERY.

Just think of College having only 66% of real valid opening slots.

33% percent of students are designed to flunk out.

Simple. Plan ahead.
