MONSEY, N.Y. An ultra-Orthodox rabbi falsely described the measles outbreak among Jews as part of an elaborate plan concocted by Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York to deflect attention from more serious diseases brought by Central American migrants.
A pediatrician questioned whether Jews were being intentionally given bad lots of vaccines that ended up giving children a new strain of the virus. And Andrew Wakefield, the British doctor whose study linking measles vaccines with autism was widely discredited and condemned, appeared via Skype to offer an almost apocalyptic vision of a world in which vaccines were giving rise to deadlier immunization-resistant diseases.
We Hasidim have been chosen as the target, said the rabbi, Hillel Handler. The campaign against us has been successful.
...
But the rally on Monday in Monsey, a Rockland County town about 30 miles northwest of New York City, vividly illustrated how the anti-vaccine fervor is not only enduring, but may be growing: Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews packed a ballroom for a vaccine symposium with leaders of the anti-vaccination movement. ...Greg Mitchell, a Washington-based lobbyist who represents the Church of Scientology, attended the meeting and addressed the crowd, offering to be their voice in the public-policy game. ...
The event was held in a large ballroom. As is customary at ultra-Orthodox gatherings, the men were separated by an improvised wall from the women. Speakers were introduced and applauded as if they were celebrities. ...
Mr. de Blasio has issued a public health emergency for four ZIP codes in Brooklyn where ultra-Orthodox Jews live. That decision appeared to have earned him the ire of Rabbi Handler, who described Mr. de Blasio as a sneaky fellow and a closet German Wilhelm, his real name, was named after Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. ...

Orthodox Jews tend to be pretty intelligent people.
We Hasidim have been chosen as the target,...
Yeah and I agree but this case is a HUGE exception.
The measles vaccine??
So we’re supposed to put ALL of our elderly and young folks at risk because of them.
Er, NO.
Maybe you should read the first line where one family said De Blasio spread the measles among them to make them targets.
He’s a nut de blasio.
That comment is nuttier.
I do not intend to comment on the statement by the rabbi or on any action taken or not taken by the mayor.
Journalistically, I think this sentence is appalling. We have all seen video of criminals committing crimes. And sometimes the criminal will say "I did it". But newspapers throw a thousand "alleged" into a story because, hey, innocent until proven guilty, right?
But the anti-Semitic NYT is real quick to tag the rabbi as someone making false statements. Really? Settled Science? The NYT knows this is a fact? I don't see how. Again: I'm not even hinting that the statement may be true. I'm just saying that the NYT abandons rules of objective coverage when they write about people they hate. Like the Jews. Like Trump.
Im the elderly. Myself my sister and brother all had the measles. No big deal. We also had the chicken pox and I had those nasty shingles and medicine made it not so bad.
The elderly all had the measles for the most part.
My kids had the vaccine. Either way the ones that have to worry are the young. And they can handle it a lot better than the adults.
My big problem with the whole thing is the slime from $h!thole countrys who bring in these diseases. Block that.
“Intelligent” doesn’t mean “rational”.
cuz Americans just don’t lay down and obediently comply with orders from those who think they are smarter than we are.
Lucky you.
Others aren’t so fortunate.
And babies are less fortunate sometimes.
Notice how liberals never talk about vaccinations and illegal immigration at the same time? Or maybe it never occurs to them that those who are flooding in from our southern border are bringing in the diseases we have controlled for decades.
> “An ultra-Orthodox rabbi falsely described the measles outbreak...”
Journalistically, I think this sentence is appalling. <
Right you are. And it’s something the MSM does all the time, especially when non-PC folks are involved.
If the rabbi said something that was false, just present the story and let the reader decide.
Independent thinking threatens the powers that be who want you to comply so that they can make their profits.
Sadly, very few free thinking people are left. Even here on FR I see many who dont question vaccine efficacy or safety. They just do what theyre told like good little sheep.
Lots of Hasidic groups are very strange and should not be considered reflective of the Jewish people or even Orthodox.
These particular guys are a bit like the Westboro Baptists.
When a religious belief or practice contradicts reality is should not be allowed to be imposed on non-believers.
One man's negative externality is another man's positive externality. Mayor Bloomberg took this to an extreme by banning smoking in NYC clubs. All the anti-smoking people were thrilled....and scores of clubs went out of business and good live music that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is hard to find (there are still some places on Bleecker St). Personally, as a freedom-loving non-smoker, I'd have preferred that the ban never be enacted.
The core concept of the Capital Asset Pricing Model is that risk can be diversified away except for that which is idiosyncratic to the firm. Similarly, in a free society, there is a base level of idiosyncratic risk which we CANNOT eliminate...people will drive drunk, commit crime, murder, they will do drugs, overeat, mishandle firearms, listen to Bruce Springsteen, and perhaps they won't immunize their kids and little Bobby may cough on you.
I'm not willing to give Leviathan the power to diversify away the idiosyncratic risk of freedom. It wouldn't work anyway, and it's the first step toward despotism.
When a religious belief or practice contradicts reality is should not be allowed to be imposed on non-believers.

You should rethink that statement. That would pretty much get rid of all religious freedoms.
They stink like chicken soup and play the welfare system.
How come we never see data that proves they are NOT safe or effective ?
Jews in general are pretty intelligent.
Insurance and Tax Fraud as well.
“An ultra-Orthodox rabbi falsely described the measles outbreak among Jews as part of an elaborate plan concocted by Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York to deflect attention from more serious diseases brought by Central American migrants.”
Sounds plausible to me; nobody will blame the immigrants.
So how does the paper KNOW that it is “false”?
Better reporting would leave out the word “falsely” in the above.
