Maybe the Persian Gulf needs a SOSUS type device... It is possible that the Iranians are using 'quiet, diesel' subs to perform this sabotage. The US Allies could set up such a device. Active Sonar should be able to reveal quiet subs along with 'metal detection'.

No explosions were detected. However, I remember a story in the 1980's where a Soviet sub DETACHED a 'tail' from a British sub.

According to my search of the Internet, S.O.S.U.S. is de-classified...

I like the way you worded that.

U.S. ALLIES.

NOT the U.S.

A BUNCH of countries ARE DYING once again to see OUR BOYS DIE.

#### them. #### them TWICE.

Subs and frogmen.

The Italians had some major successes against the British in WWII doing the exact same thing.

If we can not start a shiny new war... One of our allies can... keep the fires warm.

This Trump thing shall pass, and we can get back to business as usual. If Trump wins a second term he will be forced to initiate this war, regardless. China ain’t there yet... They lack cohesion and numbers of hardened units.

Iran is begging for retribution. We probably own them too.

War in Iran should turn into at least a decade of horror, once we invade.

Good times.

It is almost impossible to “sink” a fully laden tanker - even deliberately.

Whatever the unknown object, anyone onboard could be forgiven for thinking it was an explosion if it wasn't. That's some heavy metal back there.

The same reports in the UAE said the tankers had been on their way to the US after being loaded with Saudi oil.

...

I don’t think we get much Saudi oil, so I doubt this story.

Various European media outlets are blaming Trump for escalating tensions, defending the Iranians, telling the US to cool it...

And one outlet is saying that the damage was done with explosive charges. That one I don’t buy, either.

Max depth is 90m (<300 ft) with an average of 50m (~150 ft).

I’m not sure a SOSUS emplacement would work all that well.

From the Photo (qCaptain link has one) and the one I saw on the news, it appears the Iranian PROBABLY targeted the propeller of the tanker.

There is a simple and quick fix: attack a 2 inch thick steel plate about 4 feet below the hull blocking any RAMMING attempt by the Iranian sub.

The Iranian subs doing this may end up damaged by ramming a turning propellor. Running into a 2 inch (or thicker plate) parallel to the bottom of the tanker suspended by beams 4 feet below the bottom of the ship might do the trick...

I am not an engineer, but at times I appear to have gifted insight...

How convenient. Who benefits from so much of the US military in the Mideast, threatening to start to blow things up again? Hint: not Iran.

I suspect Obama and Kerry have been orchestrating with Iran behind our backs. They would like nothing better than to embroil Trump in a conflict to piss his base off.

Yes, SOSUS, in concept is de-classified. I question how well it could work within the Persian Gulf however, as the average depth is about 160 feet, which makes it one, large bathtub. And with all the shipping and small craft in the Gulf, it's a very noisy bathtub. Given how quiet diesel-electric subs are, it might be very tricky pick up a few, stray frequencies among all the other broadband noise.

Within the same paragraph, you conflate SOSUS and "active" sonar. They are two different things. SOSUS is passive sonar, meaning it just "listens." Active sonar "pings," and would be more useful for locating and prosecuting quiet submarines.

My best guess would be that if the Iranians ARE using diesel subs, their sonar operators (and likely all their sub crews), aren't the most skilled at their jobs. Their subs are likely coming to the surface quite a bit and using their periscopes to identify a target. In fact, they may even be using their sub radar.

If the Iranians spend a lot of time on or near the surface, it would change how we detect them, and I think the strategy would benefit us.

It doesn’t look like an explosion.

It looks like somebody took a can opener to the ships.

Or rammed them.

Remember the ramp of teeth above the Nautilus in 20,000 leagues below the sea?

That.
