When someone opens fire at a school, should students intervene?
It's a question being raised after two shootings in which students lost their lives after choosing to take action. Kendrick Castillo, 18, died in Tuesday's shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch outside Denver. He was shot and killed when he tackled one of the shooters, giving other students a chance to flee.
Last week 21-year-old University of North Carolina Charlotte student Riley Howell met the same fate when he knocked a campus shooter off his feet.
"When we're talking about school shooters, almost always, if anybody's going to get shot, it's the intervener. That's why we put police officers in Kevlar vests," says Frank Zimring, a professor of law and criminal justice studies at the University of California Berkeley.
In the Colorado and North Carolina shootings, Zimring says each intervention likely saved lives.
One of the Colorado students who charged the Highlands Ranch shooter along with Castillo said at a press conference he had "no hesitation" about jumping into action to try to thwart the attack. Zimring, who studies gun violence and mass shootings, says teenage "machismo or heroic ambition" likely played a role in that decision. And while that bravery is admirable, Zimring says intervention is always the least-preferable option.
"From an authority or risk-management standpoint, it is only when contacts with authorities who are armed and trained, or escape or hiding, is not possible, when it really becomes a situation where intervention might be necessary," he tells Here & Now's Peter O'Dowd.

Paging John Lott.
Active closure is currently taught by many self defense instructors. I tried it in a shoot house with sims. I died but so did the bad guy. Running the scenario without active closure, many times, resulted in 4-7 good guys dying. I am sold that it is the best last resort compared to cowering in a corner waiting to get shot.
Hat tip to these young men.
Where was their armed school employee?
Logic says attack and reduce the number killed.
To do so, an individual must have a dedication to others.
Progressives aren’t brought up that way.
The kids have a stark choice to make in these cases. Help may not come for several minutes, in which time many students are going to die. The only ones who have a chance to stop a shooter are the ones in the nearest vicinity.
The pricipal should run out their with the gun free zone sign and the shooter will kindly leave.
No, they should just quiver in fear and wait for the shooter to get around to them. Or maybe they could disarm him with some soothing James Taylor soft-folk songs. How about a group hug?
There is no higher honor in this world than to lay down your life for another
The school I work at has had A.L.I.C.E. training by the local sheriff’s office. Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. If there is an intruder/shooter the school is alerted and doors are locked. The school is informed of the intruder’s location. If he is no where near, you evacuate. If gets into the room with you, you counter him with whatever you have at hand. Hiding under a desk is just waiting to be killed. The men who countered the shooters died, but their sacrifice no doubt saved others. They are heroes and did the right thing.
More to the point: the godforsaken liberal schools should be bring in experts in combat to teach students THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS!!
No real American boy can sit there with his thumb up his ass as his friends are being killed.
Teach them how to overpower these murdering cowards and do whatever has to be done to stop the attack.
This aint no disco.
Oh! Yes, I forgot: GUN FREE ZONE
Thats the ticket!
I heard half the students in that classroom were crying.
It’s a safe bet several of them were boys.
They were raised to be that way.
Let that all sink in.
We are trying to breed that out of our sexually ambidextrous youth. In Europe they have almost achieved that nirvana.
They would have died along with possibly 100's of others. I realize that military jets at that point would have shot them down, but these heroes had no way of knowing that.
"...it is only when contacts with authorities who are armed and trained, or escape or hiding, is not possible, when it really becomes a situation where intervention might be -IS- necessary...,"
Indeed, equivocation can be fatal.
The original “author” of which was....Joe Biden.
My son is the starting middle linebacker on his high schools football team and wants to join the marines after school. I told him if something goes down at school that I would expect him to go down fighting if it came to that.
Run, hide, fight.
Its cut down on the number of mass shooting deaths.
Its a personal choice.
Should some “adult” stop them ?
There are those who feel that plane was shot down anyway.
