A northern Kentucky teenager banned from school for refusing the chickenpox vaccination due to his religious beliefs has come down with the childhood malady, his attorney said Wednesday.

Jerome Kunkel, a student at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Assumption Academy, first started showing chickenpox symptoms last week and hopes to have recovered by next week, a lawyer for the 18-year-old told NBC News.

Kunkel and his family have no regrets about their decision to not be vaccinated.

"These are deeply held religious beliefs, they're sincerely held beliefs," family attorney Christopher Wiest said. "From their perspective, they always recognized they were running the risk of getting it, and they were OK with it."

It really depends on how badly one has it and IF one has it inside as well. The Chickenpox can be a light case to an almost deadly one.

Yeah. But those who had chickenpox are at risk for shingles later in life.

There’s a vaccine for shingles. Ironic, isn’t it?

Had them twice and was under 30. Brought on by very stressful times in my life which whacked my immune system. Can’t imagine if elderly.

I am glad the Catholic Church allows vaccines. I never want polio, pneumonia, and especially shingles. I haven’t had the shingles vaccine yet due to age, but I’ll be first in line when able. I find anti-Vaxxers weird.

I just heard this agrument against the vaccination refuted by the head of the Catholic Bioethics Center, Father Tad Pacholczyk on Catholic Answers Live the other day. Basically, what this kid objected to is not the teaching of the Catholic Church so I’m kind of confused how a private religious school was forced to go against its own teaching by a secular court.

With the flood of diseases the illegals bring in,
we’re going to need a bigger syringe, not to make
ourselves defenseless. There a reasons you get
so damned many shots in the military.

Yes it’s very similar to the CP vaccine. In fact, the older shingles vaccine was the current CP vaccine.

Vaccines do NOT cause autism!

Vaccines can and DO save lives; measles kills, can cause blindness and deafness.

The Mumps causes sterility in males, should they contract that disease at or past the onset of puberty.

Polio causes death or a life long deformity or paralysis.

And these FACTS have nothing at all to do with your contempt for the "big pharma" boogyman.

Under most circumstances the Catholic Church allows vaccones unless they are made using aborted fetuses or embryonic stem cells but it still isn’t that cut and dry in the prohibitions. It depends on many factors like if there are alternatives available, how far back the cell lines are, what would be the risks and dangers of not being vaccinated, etc...
