The last time the unemployment rate was this low, the Beatles were still together. Woodstock was right around the corner. There was a new President named Richard Nixon and Donald Trump was just a recent college grad.
That's how long it's been.
The unemployment rate was at or under 4%, as it is now, from December of 1965 until January of 1970, according to data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was a pivotal time in US history -- but now it is not remembered for the unemployment rate.
They were not quiet years. Those were the years in which Medicare was passed into law and the Civil Rights movement was in full swing. They also saw most of the US casualties in Vietnam. Things were so bad that Lyndon B. Johnson decided not to run for reelection in 1968, which ultimately led to violence at the Democratic convention that year and gave Nixon an opening to return from his political wilderness.
So what's the lesson?
"A good economy is not the be-all and end-all to elections," said Princeton political historian Julian Zelizer, asked about the 1960s vs. today. "That was a period when the economy was still doing very well -- even better than today in many ways."

What the Hell?
Nixon was a Boy Scout compared to LBJ and Kennedy.
He was set up by the Deep State
Nixon kicked ass in those elections. What is the author talking about?
I guess it depends on how you look at things.
Are you happy at the end of the day when you think,
I snookered em again and had other people pay my way
Or
I did some good work today.
?
Someone on Nixons team hired some guys to break in to the Watergate and spy on his opponents and the nation was appalled. Obama uses all the apparatus of our government to spy and set up his opponents and the Democrats cheered.
Nixon was a Boy Scout compared to Clinton and Obama as well.
I thought the 'break-in' was to retrieve the dirty on John Dean's Blondie?
Nixon was not perfect but he was screwed twice.
“Silent Coup” has been the basis for a lot of failed lawsuits against the writer and his publisher. Someone finally won one, but the terms were sealed.
Was John covering for Mo, ex-hooker?
The book makes a good case but in the
end, who knows?
Yeah compare apples to oranges, that’ll do it for you. /sarcasm
And unemployment was low in part because Johnson sent 550,000 troops to Vietnam.
“So what’s the lesson?”
Elect Nationalist Republicans and never listen to FBI ladder climbers trying to hijack the government for their own profit
“Nixon was a Boy Scout compared to Clinton and Obama as well”
And Jim Wright and Richard Daley, who stole the 1960 election from Nixon.
Nixon was enough of an American that he stood down and let it stand, said he didn’t want to drag the country through the mud.
He should never have resigned. He was the victim of a Deep State coup and by resigning he set the precedent that a President can be forced out if the Deep State wishes.
“He should never have resigned”
Think we are all learning that now, as the template for bureaucratic rebellion in coordination with the Rat party becomes clear.
The old milquetoast Republicans who goaded Nixon into leaving are now the Never-Trumper RINOs, and DJT isn’t going to even let them stay in office, much less let them talk him into surrendering to the baying monkey demons of the Deranged party.
Yea well, Watergate was in the 70’s, not the 60’s so there’s that small fact.
1973 to be exact but I don’t want to put too fine a point on the matter.
