~ Hall of Heroes ~ Junior J. Spurrier Info from here. |
|
Junior James Spurrier, born James I. Spurrier, Jr., was a United States Army soldier who received America's highest military decoration葉he Medal of Honor庸or his actions in World War II. James I. Spurrier, Jr. was born on December 14, 1922, in Russell County, Kentucky. In September 1940, he enlisted in the Army. Spurrier filled his name in the wrong blanks, so he became "Junior J. Spurrier" to the Army. Near Lay St. Christopher, France, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross. He had spearheaded an assault on a stubbornly defended hill position. On a tank destroyer, he used a .50-caliber machine gun to kill over 12 Germans and captured 22 others. He climbed down to personally blow up bunkers with rifle fire and grenades. On November 13, 1944, while serving as a Staff Sergeant with Company G, 134th Infantry, 35th Infantry Division, Spurrier fought Germans in Achain, Moselle, France. Repeatedly, Spurrier wandered into the command post with prisoners, replenished his ammo, then slipped out the door. Junior J. Spurrier earned the Medal of Honor for nearly single-handedly capturing the village of Achain that day. He received the Medal of Honor on March 6, 1945 from Lt. Gen. William Hood Simpson. Spurrier had a very turbulent life after the war. He had a severe problem with alcohol, was discharged from the Army in 1951, and served two jail sentences. He is buried in Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City, Tennessee. On Dec. 02 2011, Spurrier's Medal Of Honor was returned to his family after being located by Chief Craig Corkrean, in a safe belonging to his father. |
Staff Sergeant Spurrier's official Medal of Honor citation reads: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy at Achain, France, on 13 November 1944. At 2 p.m., Company G attacked the village of Achain from the east. S/Sgt. Spurrier armed with a BAR passed around the village and advanced alone. Attacking from the west, he immediately killed 3 Germans. From this time until dark, S/Sgt. Spurrier, using at different times his BAR and Ml rifle, American and German rocket launchers, a German automatic pistol, and handgrenades, continued his solitary attack against the enemy regardless of all types of small-arms and automatic-weapons fire. As a result of his heroic actions he killed an officer and 24 enlisted men and captured 2 officers and 2 enlisted men. His valor has shed fresh honor on the U.S. Armed Forces. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

May 6Come and Get It!
Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. Isaiah 55:3 I peeked over the grape-stake fence that encloses our backyard. There I saw folks running, jogging, walking, and shuffling around the track that surrounds the park behind our home. I used to do that when I was stronger, I thought. And a wave of dissatisfaction washed over me.
Later, while reading the Scriptures, I came across Isaiah 55:1, Come, all you who are thirsty, and I realized again that dissatisfaction (thirst) is the rule, not the exception in this life. Nothing, not even the good things of life, can fully satisfy. If I had strong legs like a Sherpa (mountain-climbing guide), there would still be something else in my life that Id be unhappy about.
Our culture is always telling us in one way or another that something we do, buy, wear, spray on, roll on, or ride in will give us endless pleasure. But thats a lie. We cant get complete satisfaction from anything in the here and now, no matter what we do.
Rather, Isaiah invites us to come again and again to God and the Scriptures to hear what He has to say. And what does He say? His love for David of old is everlasting and faithful (v. 3). And that goes for you and me as well! We can come to Him.
By David H. Roper
Today's Reflection
In what ways are you thirsty? How can knowing God is faithful help you today?

Howdy, radu! Hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend! Has the weather been pretty?
It was here. We have been promised rain for the past few days and haven’t even gotten a sprinkle. Darn it!

Howdy, LUV!
It was a quiet day and that was most welcome after yesterday and last night.
The day started out cloudy but the skies cleared in the afternoon and it was quite pretty. Just a little cool with the stiff breeze blowing.
I wish some of that promised rain would move across your area. You need it so badly.
Be glad you aren’t in KS tonight. I checked the radar to see what was showing and thee are tornado warnings. Of course, that meant pulling up our favorite storm chasers and one’s about to be in the thick of things.

I do need to check on those storm chasers. They were around this area last night...well, north of us in the “Panhandle”.
Glad you had a nice day and especially that the sun was shining for you!

I don’t know that it’s worth your time to watch this storm chaser. He’s one I haven’t watched before but he’s the only one streaming right now and he’s doing a terrible job of it. He’s around Wichita and they’re getting hammered and we haven’t seen much in the way of the lightning and such. Had several minutes looking at the front of a convenience storefront and now he’s parked in front of a building with a lot of trees behind it and can see little of the sky. Now he’s moving again. Dang, he stopped again with a big tree directly in front of him.
He seems to be a bit of a chicken and if you’re scared, don’t be a storm chaser.
It was nice to see the sun again after yesterday, most definitely. We’re good until Wed. when we have 4 or 5 days afterwards of rain. :-(
