Trump blasts Kentucky Derby decision to disqualify Maximum Security
NYPost ^ | May 5, 2019

President Trump on Sunday blamed “political correctness” for a controversial decision at the Kentucky Derby that led to the disqualification of the apparent winner in favor of a 65-to-1 long shot.

”The Kentuky Derby decision was not a good one. It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch,” Trump wrote on Twitter, misspelling the state’s name. “Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby – not even close!”

Maybe he lost a big bet on this one, or lost a big payout.

Rules are rules and all the stewards agreed on the prevailing ruling. I expect we have not heard the last of this.

The jockey did his best to keep the horse straight. The horse was fine until he noticed the 50,000 screaming fans in the infield (something he’s never dealt with before). He began drifting to his right away from the fans. The jockey was using the whip on the horse’s right to correct him. It was a foul that was not malevolent or planned. Normally what the stewards called was proper. They should have passed on this day realizing what the implications of taking down the Derby winner would be.

The horse was spooked by the 50,000 screaming fans in the infield and reacted by shying away from them. The jockey was doing his best to correct the horse and keep him straight with the whip. It was no one’s fault, just the luck of betting on a horse race. It was a foul and should have been called on every other race of the year, but not the Kentucky Derby.

Since it was spelled correctly in his second reference to the state, I assumed the first instance was a typo not a misspelling.

But I don’t scour the internet looking for things to criticize about Trump the way the NYP seems to do.

The media is so petty. They never wrote about Obama talking about the “corps” man, or the 57 states. I despise the media.

Remember when obammy tried to enter the WH thru a window that looked like a door? Barely a whisper. But when Bush walked off stage to door that turned out to be locked, they couldn't replay it enough.

At least it was an actual door.

Lets see 120 Lb Jockey trying to Control a 1000 Lb horse in Mud at 37 mph on a Curve in a crowd..He strays, corrects, and continues to outrun the field..A jockey whose horse was 65-1 complains..3 Sterwards decide to make History..As Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey said on the broadcast, “yes it was a foul, but the fastest horse won the race” he didn’t see it being serious enough to overturn....But what would he know.. with so many internet experts out there...Outrageous Decision ruins Triple Crown drama..Horse Racing is going, going, go....

I wouldn’t have overturned it but you have no idea if the fastest horse won. War of Will was very much in a position to get the lead and hold it. Loosing the momentum he was building and the 7 horse was losing cost the 1 horse multiple lengths.

"It was a foul and should have been called on every other race of the year, but not the Kentucky Derby."

The racing rules are written for every race on any given day....rules are for eveeryone..except Mrs. Clinton.

No, I don’t know 100% what he’s into, but judging by all the media hype over 30 years, his shows, and his actions even as president....99% he is NOT a racing fan. He has not a hand in any racing that has EVER come up in watching all major racing, and has never quipped about horses or anything in public statement. I think he knows zilch.

That’s is one of the great things about HORSE rAcing...races are almost never called. They don’t stop. Only recently with wimpy PETA type complaints has Saratoga cancelled dates for “too hot”, some for snow, and the Preakness delayed from that deluge for American Pharoah. Racing goes on regardless.

Further, you delay one race it dominoes into the next. Only the final race has no effect.

But agreed, people gripe whether it’s their way or not. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

“Disqualified means the horse isn’t given credit for having participated in the race.”

Thanks, I don’t pretend to be an expert on horse racing. I did hear on the news a few hours ago that Maximum Security was slotted at 17th.

IMHO, Trump is right in terms of the “pure sport” that horse racing is meant to be. I saw the video and didn’t see any outrageous violation in a sport where you expect to see a little contact. And I’m your average Joe spectator.

Trump cares about the quality of sports. And it’s probably one reason he’s visiting the Sumo match in Japan this month. Sumo is not perfect either, but it’s closer than most sports to the notion that competency wins, and honest effort and skill gets rewarded.

If “technicalities” are allowed to dominate sports,it will only lead to a degradation of sports. Not a single time has such a technicality been called against the winner throughout the Derby’s long illustrious history! Why now? Does the woman steward want to see Mares competing instead of Stallions? Equal opportunity horse racing? Sounds ridiculous, yes, but I’ll bet the Lefties hate horse racing for that and similar “white sport” reasons.

Another reason Trump’s getting involved is he welcomes Fake News and the GOPe to attack him on this. Trump wants to on the side of men and women who want “pure sports”.

Believe me, as this story evolves, Trump will once again come out looking like the Kentucky Derby stallion he is.

There are no lanes but the rule is very plain: 4.15 Fouls: A leading horse, when clear, is entitled to any part of the track. If a leading horse or any other horse in a race swerves or is ridden to either side so as to interfere with or intimidate or impede any other horse or Jockey, it is a foul. If a Jockey strikes another horse or Jockey, it is a foul. If in the opinion of the Stewards, a foul alters the finish of a race, any offending horse may be disqualified by the Stewards.

Clearly, even a semi-blind person could see Maximum Security swerved into another horse which forced that horse to swerve into another. Thank God the jockeys were competent otherwise a great tragedy could have occurred.

Come on FReepers, rules are meant to be followed otherwise we are no better than liberals.

Your point? In otherwords, high profile horses/people can get away with anything? That is liberal thinking.

I am wondering if there were gambling shenanigans….32 years ago I worked at the race track in California as a Hot walker. my experience taught me that other then the races with with the million dollar horses there was always games being played with the low quality horses. everyone had a scam that they would run to make money the biggest on was to hold back a horse from winning till the ods on the horse were 20-1 0r better then pushing the horse to win. Drugs were almost never involved with fixing the race another way was to get a jockey to fowled the horse the way the money would be made was to get a third party to place the bet it being illegal for the trainer or the jockey to bet on the race. every once in a while word would get out at the track that his was happening and suddenly you would have sevral people betting on a long shot making it no longer a long shot....I myself actualy bet on a race that was fixed by the horse being held back by the trainer...I found out because my friend was the groom for the horse and he was told by his trainer to make a bet on the horse as a payback for working for the guy. wages at the race track are extremely low and if you are good at your work and can keep your mouth shut you might get informed as a pay back
