Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy plays himself in “To Hell and Back.” (Universal)

Never Surrender: WWII in the Movies is a 75-movie series airing on Turner Classic Movies in recognition of the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The series runs on Thursdays in May and June.

TCM host Ben Mankiewicz visited the National World War II Museum in New Orleans to film the channel’s trademark introductions with the museum’s staff and noted WWII historian Lynne Olson. He also talked with us about the series and TCM’s unique relationship with its viewers.

The month of May is devoted to movies about life and sacrifice on the homefront. June features the WWII combat movies that we know and love and quite a few obscure titles that deserve a first (or second) look.

My dad was on the DD USS WADSWORTH, they were always on the tip of the spear headed towards Japan, sans 2 months at Mare Island for a refit.

My FIL was on a CE Escort Carrier. CEs were to be the pack houses of the fleet assigned to carry replacement planes and pilots across Pacific up to the front line.

FIL said prior to start of Coral Sea, his Div Officer announced that we are now a front line carrier. Someone at quarters asked what that meant, he replied that any ship that floats is front line. I think my Dad’s destroyer had more below water armored plating than the CEs.

Daddy was in the combat engineers.

On the first day of the Battle of the Bulge, their C.O. was asked if he could cease their operation cutting timber in the Ardennes. If so they were to take a position blocking the Germans.

He replied that they could and did. Fortunately for them, the Germans took another route and it was the 291st which bore the brunt of the German spear.

Military Times reports filming starts next month at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, with additional filming taking place in Canada. The film will star actor Woody Harrelson as Admiral Chester Nimitz and is reportedly calling for military families living in the Pearl Harbor area to appear as extras. The film is set for a 2019 release.

Under no circumstances can I picture Woody Harrelson playing Adm. Chester Nimitz. Total miscasting.

Harrelson is a despicable leftist, but also a first rate actor. If he is trur to his craft he will be far better than Fonda who slept walked through his role in Midway 1976

It's from the guy who made "Independence Day"
but he has a history of not-so-big box office.
Here's hoping this will be  as good as Independence Day.

And Woody looks enough like Nimitz.  We'll see.

Oh no, I didn’t mean to imply that there was anything wrong with Myrna! Those Thin Man movies are among my favorites.

I can’t really explain my dislike of that movie, but for some reason I find it terribly depressing (probably because of poor Homer).

“Homer” won the Academy Award for that, I think. Earned it, I’d say. Became active in AmVets.
