Federal judges toss out Ohio’s congressional map as illegal gerrymander

A three-judge federal panel unanimously ruled Friday that Ohio’s gerrymandered congressional district map is unconstitutional, and ordered the creation of a new map in time for the 2020 election.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, on behalf of the League of Women voters and others, filed the suit a year ago in an attempt to move up the timetable for congressional redistricting reform in the state.

“This ruling is a victory for every Ohio voter, because a fair congressional map before the 2020 means a stronger democracy for the Buckeye State," said Jen Miller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Ohio.

An appeal is possible directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“We join the other federal courts that have held partisan gerrymandering unconstitutional and developed substantially similar standards for adjudicating such claims,” the ruling read in part.

“We are convinced by the evidence that this partisan gerrymander was intentional and effective and that no legitimate justification accounts for its extremity. ... the 2012 map dilutes the votes of Democratic voters by packing and cracking them into districts that are so skewed toward one party that the electoral outcome is predetermined. We conclude that the map unconstitutionally burdens associational rights by making it more difficult for voters and certain organizations to advance their aims, be they pro-Democratic or pro- democracy."

The only thing a revision of the district map will achieve is more Rats in office.

They’ll appoint a leftist overseer to draw the next map in a bipartisan fashion for Democrats.

Didn’t they also file a lawsuit in Michigan on the same issue?

So what’s the deal here? Gerrymandering is ok when Democrats are in charge, but unconstitutional if Republicans draw the congressional district maps?????

With those people involved, nothing good will come of this.

Gerrymandering is ALWAYS a part of redistricting.

Who knew?

In PA the supreme court just drew the map, completely overreaching their authority and undermining the legislature, and the legislature, being weak kneed GOPe folks, just let it happen, without challenge.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ohio, brought the suit -- whew, at least we know it was a non-partsian effort. So, when does the ACLU do something about California's single party primary system?

Gee, somebody should look at the GerryMandered Districts in California, designed specifically and admittedly to keep Democrats in Power.

Then there is Maryland, which makes Ohio look like an orderly drawing of boundaries.

Yup. This is part of a very carefully thought out, Alinsky-style plan to tip the table in their direction.

They went after PA first. It worked here so all other states are vulnerable.

Well, generally its not ugly, but it is a pain for the poll workers.... they should direct them to the correct location, and if someone is hugely belligerent then they will just be given a provisional ballot, and then the folks down at the county board of elections can determine if the ballot should be counted or not.

Its not really ugly, other than when voters decide to be jackasses, but it is a pain for the poll workers.

The illegal gerrymander which was required by the Democrat-controlled PA Supreme Court NOT being challenged at all by the cowardly Republicans is what has given the liberal judges free reign to mandate outcomes in other Republican controlled states (Michigan and now Ohio).

But never fear, we have tough Ronna Romney at the head of the RNC to fight and win on behalf of patriotic Americans whose voices are being silenced by these black-robed tyrants.

Oh wait...

In Virginia, the court ordered a professor from UC Irvine to draw our new districts.
