As Avengers: Endgame continues its world-conquering run at the box office, one particular scene is attracting some attention for introducing the franchises first openly gay character. And while some fans are pleased to see the MCU finally take this first step in LGBTQ representation, others were left feeling pretty underwhelmed.
The character in question features in a scene where Steve Rogers leads a post-snap support group. One of the attendees, played by Endgame co-director Joe Russo, mentions that he went on his first date since the events of Avengers: Infinity War, using the he pronoun to refer to his partner. In that moment, Endgame becomes the first Marvel movie to acknowledge that gay people exist in the cinematic universe. The problem is that this first example of an LGBTQ character is almost completely inconsequential, getting only one scene, a few lines and no name.
Though some will argue that this one minor character is better than nothing, his inclusion also feels like too small of a baby step to seem especially brave or groundbreaking in 2019. And the fact that Joe Russo emphasized this moment by playing the character himself has struck some fans as unduly self-congratulatory, not least when Marvel TV shows like Jessica Jones, Runaways and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have already introduced multiple queer characters with far more prominent roles.
In any case, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has repeatedly hinted that a greater level of LGBTQ representation is coming to the MCU, and just last month, executive vice president of production Victoria Alonso claimed that the world is ready for the franchises first gay superhero. Clearly, Avengers: Endgame wasnt considered the right film to follow through on this tease, though if recent reports are anything to go by, then perhaps Russos unnamed character could be considered a stepping stone for whats to come in The Eternals.
Gee, and I was planning to put this movie in my queue at Netflix to see it when it becomes available on DVD.
Oh well...
I passed on Black Panther and Captain Marvel. After this Avenger’s movie I’m also done.
Because they are of that 2% of the population, and are desperate to find revelance in their sexual addictions And misery.
First thing I thought of...
As if.
Thank goodness there were a few hours of screen time without having to deal with an agenda I don’t support.
Ah, let us out of the closet. We jut want to be ourselves...
B. S.
It was a pretty stupid scene. Rogers was talking about rebuilding the world and the homosexual was whining about his date. How are homosexuals going to rebuild the world?
Too bad. I was going to see this movie. Not now. I saw homosexuality destroy my beloved brother....not going to give my little bit of money to something like this. Theyve already made a billion...they wont miss mine.
Because they make up a significant percentage of the entertainment industry, and are an even larger percentage of the people that make the decisions.
These people are terminators. you cant reason with them, you cant argue with them, you can buy them, you cant bargain with them. they have no empathy, no soul, they serve the god of death and they will keep coming and coming at you. They will never stop until you are dead. Jez how many times do we have to debate the absurd notion that these things have any desire to co- exist peacefully with hetrosexuals and Christians!!!!
I saw this today, and while I loved the movie, THAT scene was not necessary. However, it really was minor.
The fact that the BLT community doesn’t think it’s enough?
Screw them! They’re 1-2% of the total population. That gets you one NPC per movie.
What a whiny leftist loon. They’re never happy until they destroy everything that excludes them and, in fact, which does not celebrate them. They don’t want acceptance. They want to rule the world and impose their views on everyone else. They are just like all other leftists. They are despots. They are wannabe Stalinists who want to take away your life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Damn them to hell!
Hey, you’ll like it.
It was a 30 second scene in a 3 hour movie.
Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water!
Personally I hated that scene it served no purpose but to pander and to top it all off we are supposed to believe a man who can of age in the 40s and was froze for 70 years just accepts a pillow biter without any personal disgust.
It was pathetic, pandering, served no purpose and just another part of why the movie was MEH...
It was a very underwhelming and forgettable movie.
NI!
Paisley prints and other fabulousness.
... and "feige" in German means ...
I won’t spead a dime on it.
Same with Season 3 of “The Man in the High Castle”. Two homo relationships: one lesbian, although the protagonist was definitely hetero in Season 2. The other was two males, one kind of a nerdy type who didn’t have any sexual relationships at all, male or female In Season 3, he meets a virile cowboy, and they “fall in love”. The kissing scenes were disgusting.
cowardly”???
“A $1.2 billion world wide opening weekend box office? Couldnt have been that upset.”
Pays to read past the headline.
