The family of John Singleton, the director, producer and screenwriter behind the 1991 film Boyz N the Hood and several other movies, said that they had directed doctors to pull him off life support on Monday after he suffered a stroke earlier this month.
It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today, said the statement, which was released by Singletons publicist around 10 a.m. Pacific time. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of Johns doctors.
Singleton, 51, a native of South Los Angeles, was nominated for an Oscar for his directing in his debut film Boyz N the Hood, which centered on three teenagers growing up amid violence in his home city. Singleton was in his early 20s and fresh out of film school when he directed the film. He was the first African-American and the youngest person ever to be nominated for the award.

Ricky!
Too young...
I don’t like to see anyone go, but that is way too young.
Wow - he had the stroke in the hospital and last I heard they thought he was going to be ok.
“Boys...” is a great film. It wasn’t a “we hate whitey”, “whitey is to blame” type film.
My dad had a stroke in the hospital. Had to wean him off his blood thinners for a surgical procedure. In the interim, bad things happened.
Yup a classic. Tre Styles, Ricky and Doughboy.
Talented director. Prayers for him and his family.
It was an accurate depiction of the characters you’d encounter in that neighborhood in that timeframe.
His dad was embittered towards larger society but Furious handled it fairly well trying to keep the larger world from taking his kid.
Fantastic talent! For a lot of us on the Right, Boyz N’ The Hood was a real eye opener about how tough it is to be raised in that environment without a strong father figure (Laurence Fishburne is a GREAT actor). Singleton understood that so much and crafted such a great cautionary tale that gets less credit that it deserves.
Sad ending. RIP.
Dayum... Loved his stuff. Boyz was an amazing movie. Not black myself and grew up in a rural setting, but I had many a friend who did grow up in the hood as young black men and they said it was pretty spot on.
Prayers for his family. Its always tough
May God comfort his family, that is always such a hard call and people question their decisions for years.
My dad had a stroke in the hospital too. Developed cryptococcal meningitis before going into the hospital. Between the anti-fungal drugs which are really harsh on the body and fungus dying which releases toxins, he had brain swelling which caused a stroke.
A few years ago my father had a stroke while at a doctors office, of all places. He lasted sixteen days before we accepted there was nothing left to do. It fell to me to sign the form to take him off life support.
Just last month, actor Luke Perry was taken by a stroke.
Now John Singleton. Both in their early 50’s.
RIP, Mr. Singleton.
I cannot even imagine what was going through your mind. I hope to never be in that situation but there is always that possibility. I guess I would approach it as there is nothing more to do medically and it is in God’s hands.
Sorry you had to do this.
Ice Cube’s first film and he really stole it.
