The “Population Bomb” Bombed. The Book Inspired by Darwinism that Triggered a Wave of Repression Around the World

April 26, 2019

by Jerry Bergman, PhD

In 1968, the “year’s most important book,” what Greg Garrard[1] called a neo-Malthusian classic, The Population Bomb, by Stanford University Professor Paul Ehrlich, “made dire predictions and triggered a wave of repression around the world.”[2] Authored by an evolutionary biologist known for his “groundbreaking studies of the co-evolution of flowering plants and butterflies,” it became a best seller, and turned the author into a celebrity.[3] The book “would become one of the most influential books of the 20th century.”[4]

From the article:

"Ehrlich also was able to reach millions on several television appearances, such as the NBC Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in February of 1970 and numerous times afterward.[9] In response to Vogt’s and Ehrlich’s ideas, the first Director-General of UNESCO, Julian Huxley, in his Evolutionary Humanism, called for a radical government-enforced world population control policy.[10] Huxley and Ehrlich openly criticized both the communist and the Roman Catholic positions on birth control, and especially on abortion, as well as on their skepticism for a need for strict governmental enforced population control to avoid disaster."

Truth is it was inspired by butterflies!

Ehrlich was an expert in butterfly population dynamics!

many of his conclusions would make sense if humans were butterflies.

They’re not!

The man has never been right about ANYTHING over his entire life. Yet universities continue to offer him honoraria and speaking fees.

Overpopulation is still a problem, it is just food technology has been able to keep up (for the most part).

Applying observations in Nature to humans is a normal part of biological science. It is how we get things like life-saving drugs.

Unless and until he/she can specifically make a link beside the OP of the author of said book that the hypothesis was inspired by “Darwinism” (which of course does not exist but we will substitute “TToE” out of kindness) then whoever coined the headline was a liar.

And you really need to stop citations from the scientific equivalent of “The Onion.”

It is most unbecoming.

“You’re really fixated on this stuff, aintcha?”

He should be. Ehrlich’s idiocy caused enormous damage.

An entire generation was exhorted to abort itself or else the world would become Soylent Green.

It was crap but resulted in 60 million abortions in the U.S. alone. The Supreme Court used it as a justification for Roe v. Wade.

Mass immigration to the US is entirely a result of one generation not reproducing and “Overpopulation” hysteria was a big reason why. The truth is that the economy kept rolling along - capitalism does that - and people were needed.

Catenate that with the 1965 Immigration Act and you have the modern nightmare of a Third World America.

Ehrlich is a vapid jerk who lives in a La La world where his juvenile scribblings are still taken seriously. We should all never forget how wrong he was and still is while we try to repair the damage.

I was in the 7th grade around that time and I remember how everyone was talking about overpopulation. imho, this is why abortion became acceptable to that generation.

I doubt that. Abortion became popular when lefty decided that babies are too much hassle.

Malthus had correctly diagnosed what economists now call the “Malthusian Trap”

America was the first country to escape the Malthusian trap, around 1820, thanks to capitalism and limited government England was a close second.

Don’t extrapolate your own ignorance to the rest of the world.

I guess you’re an authority on obscure writings about
abortion or eugenics or whatever cute topic this guy
wrote about. Good for you.

Some people may need education about that stuff more than others.

I’m glad you’ve been “educated”, apparently you needed to be.
