The “Population Bomb” Bombed. The Book Inspired by Darwinism that Triggered a Wave of Repression Around the World

April 26, 2019

by Jerry Bergman, PhD

In 1968, the “year’s most important book,” what Greg Garrard[1] called a neo-Malthusian classic, The Population Bomb, by Stanford University Professor Paul Ehrlich, “made dire predictions and triggered a wave of repression around the world.”[2] Authored by an evolutionary biologist known for his “groundbreaking studies of the co-evolution of flowering plants and butterflies,” it became a best seller, and turned the author into a celebrity.[3] The book “would become one of the most influential books of the 20th century.”[4]

“Overpopulation is still a problem”

No it isn’t.

The planet is vastly EMPTY of people.
The “problem” for the CTRL-LFT Fascists is that “the wrong kind of people” are over-breeding.

Another “problem” is that due to modern life, people are choosing to live on top of each other, in packed cities.

Nothing obscure about Ehrlich.

His book prompted Richard Nixon to make overpopulation an issue in ‘69-70 and even a motivation for the establishment of the EPA.

A grad student at Stanford, Dennis Hayes, worked with him and Gaylord Nelson to get Earth Day going and the entire luddite/watermelon “environmental” movement which was really a misanthropic Marxist initiative that we are still fighting to this day.

Even pop culture reflected his nonsense:

Not sure why you’re unaware of all this, but the truth is that much of the post-60’s political movements on the Left were and are animated by what he said. Not just Marx and Engels or the Democrat party. They just rode the coattails.

Is he still around?

He should have died decades ago from real life repudiation, if not professional embarrassment.

Of note, in that book Ehrlich predicted the poor brown and black people of the south would invade the rich, white north.

He was 100% correct on that aspect.

“It was crap but resulted in 60 million abortions in the U.S. alone. “

Nonsense.

There is no rational way to attribute 60 million abortions to Ehrlich’s exhortation to control the population of the earth.

As if he had that much influence.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but the President has proclaimed the US to be full.

“Don’t extrapolate your own ignorance to the rest of the world.”

That’s what I was thinking. Ehrlich is not exactly an unkown author.

WOW!
Ehrlich is a complete poster boy for the absolute lie of the Left no matter what.

That the planet was physically too small was not the thesis of the author.

You could comfortably ft every human being on Earth into the State of Texas (do the math — it is true).

The author said we would run our of resources. And in many places on Earth that is true. Not in the USA, where the only reason some goes hungry is they choose to (for the most part — I don’t want to get into the mentally ill homeless here).

Hunger due to overpopulation is the default condition for much of the Earth.

When the Population Bomb was starting to fizzle they switched to climate change. Fear is all they have.

“Some people may need education about that stuff more than others.”

Yes, as your comments have amply demonstrated.

“There is no rational way to attribute 60 million abortions to Ehrlich’s exhortation to control the population of the earth”

No, that’s accurate - if you think I’m blaming it all on him. But I’m not attributing all of it to him. Obviously the push also came from Sanger and women’s rights groups, but the point is that a significant part of the justification came from “overpopulation”.

Remember “replacement children”? The exhortation to slow population growth in the US, pushed by the Rockefeller Commission?

One way to do that was cheap available abortion, destigmatized.

It was a recipe for societal suicide.

In 1979 I drove from Long Island to Tulsa Oklahoma. Before I was half done with that trip I knew the population bomb thing was utter crap.

Yes, as your comments have amply demonstrated.

Demonstrated that you pay a WHOLE lot more attention to
what obscure people might think about something than I do.

Carry on, you all woke.

Mueller Investigation is the tip of the ice burg. The IRS going after conservatives like Karen Kenny that did win her case against the IRS targeting her. It was announced the other day that the FBI has been targeting conservatives for the past four years.

Even EA games leaked inside memo said me (steve Van Doorn) am a racists. The reason I was a racists was because I corrected the moderators on why Trump wasn't a racists. in That Memo was a black list to have me removed. Which they did by claiming I broke their obscure contract you have to agree on. I talked to a lawyer he said because I did "brake their rule" I have a weak case.
