Letters from Joe Biden reveal how he sought support of segregationists in fight against busing

In a series of never-before-published letters from Biden, which were reviewed by CNN, the strength of his opposition to busing comes into sharper focus, particularly how he followed the lead of -- and sought support from -- some of the Senate's most fervent segregationists.

"My bill strikes at the heart of the injustice of court-ordered busing. It prohibits the federal courts from disrupting our educational system in the name of the constitution where there is no evidence that the governmental officials intended to discriminate," Biden wrote to fellow senators on March 25, 1977. "I believe there is a growing sentiment in the Congress to curb unnecessary busing."

Biden, who at the time was 34 and serving his first term in the Senate, repeatedly asked for -- and received -- the support of Sen. James Eastland, a Mississippi Democrat and chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a leading symbol of Southern resistance to desegregation. Eastland frequently spoke of blacks as "an inferior race."

"Dear Mr. Chairman," Biden wrote on June 30, 1977. "I want you to know that I very much appreciate your help during this week's committee meeting in attempting to bring my anti-busing legislation to a vote."

Two weeks later, Biden followed up with a note to Eastland "to thank you again for your efforts in support of my bill to limit court ordered busing."

Biden, who would go on to lead the Judiciary Committee a decade later, got his start on the panel under Eastland. Few senators were more virulently outspoken against desegregation than the Mississippi senator, who was known for incendiary floor speeches on race.

Yet Biden invited Eastland to speak on the Senate floor in support of his anti-busing bill.

Biden fondles children — not a problem for CNN.

Opposing school busing — problem.

doesn’t matter- He could have owned a restaurant and refused to allow minorities to eat there- and the public on the left, and independents won’t care- they ONLY care when a republican does these things

I realize the liberals at CNN meant this as a condemnation, but it makes me look (every so slightly) more favorable on Biden.

A person can be in favor of integration and be against forced busing of young school children to achieve it.

He is finished. I will never forget his slanderous attacks on the great jurist Clarence Thomas at his confirmation hearing. Biden took the side of the liar AH in one of the most contrived hit jobs on a black man since the hangings in Mississippi. Like balsey Ford she has disappeared in disgrace as the lies did not work and the Senate voted they were both liars but Biden was viscous against Thomas . Now ,it turns out that Biden was a segregationist RACIST hypocrite and this will be fun to watch.

So who is leaking this info to CNN? Or who knew about this? I guess Obama’s people would have checked up on him before choosing him for VP? Is Hillary behind it? I assume someone besides the no-nothing idiots now running alerted interested parties...

“I guess Obama’s people would have checked up on him before choosing him for VP?”

Of course. But now Biden is not wanted.

Court ordered busing. Shows how important it is for Trump to appoint as many judges as possible.

It is the courts that ruined this country...not the Democrats in Congress.

Busing is the most egregious example of judicial over-reach.

Judge Garrity of Boston will go down in history as the worst Federal District judge in history and testimony to the fact that judges have no business nor the experience to create public policy. His Boston decision in 1974 to mandate school bussing was the harbinger for destroying urban public schools and further segregating them and accelerating white flight from cities. Can’t blame touchy feely Joe for opposing it then although of course now the superficial clown without a core will say he was mistaken.

WILMINGTON, Del:, Jan. 8 (UPI) —Federal Judge Murray Schwartz issued a desegregation plan today affecting three‐quarters of Delaware's public school students, ordering Wilmington students bused to the suburbs for nine years and white suburban pupils bused to the city for three years.

That was in January 1978, It had been to the Supreme Court.

Biden was right that time and doing exactly what most of his constituents wanted him to do.

“A person can be in favor of integration”

What does being “in favor of integration” mean? As opposed to being “against segregation enforced by law”?

Does being in favor of integration mean what blacks do on their own is inadequate or unacceptable?

That's true and it was a horrible fight in Delaware.

It has never worked when you force one socio-economic group on another - and that was what this Wilmington/New Castle County thing was, not just color.

The judges are appointed by the elected politicians. All judges are political. A judge appointed by a democrat is a political democrat judge.
