Survey: Millenials Know Almost Nothing About Holocaust

A survey conducted by Schoen Consulting in Canada for the Azrieli Foundation and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, also known as the Claims Conference revealed some disturbing data about Holocaust awareness.

75 years after the end of World War II, 54 percent of those surveyed did not know that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. 62% of millennials, people born in the 1980s and ’90s, did not know that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. 22% of millennials haven’t heard or are not sure if they have heard of the Holocaust. An alarming 52% of millennials cannot name even one of the over 40,000 concentration camps and ghettos in Europe during the Holocaust. Nearly one-quarter of all Canadians (23 percent) believe that substantially less than six million Jews were killed (two million or fewer) during the Holocaust, while another near-quarter (24 percent) were unsure of how many were killed.

This is not just a millennial issue - history isn't taught well in schools. People need to learn that not only were 6 million Jews murdered, but also 6 million others - gypsies, Poles, Jehovah's Witnesses, priests etc.

The gypsy holocaust was in many ways worse than the Jewish holocaust - a larger % of them died and they were treated worse than Jews in the death camps.

The Nazis also targeted Catholic and Protestant priests and pastors - putting them in camps and killing them

And this was not just "Germans killing Jews" but also British and American governments not allowing Jews to escape before the war, French, Norwegian and other Quisling governments deporting Jews, gypsies to be murdered; Jewish capos in ghettos like the Lodz ghetto run by Chaim Rumkowski and the Jewish council

We need to learn how quickly HUMAN BEINGs became demons - not just Germans

We need to also champion the people who did NOT become demons but became saints like

1. Janusz Korczak - the director of a children's home in Warsaw who would not have been killed as he was too famous, yet volunteered to go into the gas chamber to comfort the children and make sure they were not terrified when they died -- God, I tear up every time I write that

2. men like Witold pilecki

who was a member of the Polish underground, the Armia Krajowa who broke INTO Auschwitz to report on the atrocities that were committed there -- the reports were sent to London and Washington and Churchill and FDR did nothing -- he was murdered by the communists after the war

3. Of Father Maximilian Kolbe, a Catholic friar who volunteered to die in another man's place in Auschwitz

Of Jozef and Wiktoria Ulm a Polish family that saved Jews, but then were murdered, along with their young children by the Germans for saving Jews

It is a shame that we do not know the names of these people who not only did not give in to the barbarity that humans fell into but went to the light, to God.

The Nazis are better known in the west, in my opinion, because the Germans were HIGH CULTURE before the NAzis. This is the land of Beethoven, of Kant, Goethe, of High culture, of scholarship, of civilization.

For the Germans to have fallen to killing and killing methodically is scary because it means that no matter how high humans may rise, they are just one word away from being monsters is scary. It is all very well to point fingers at the 1930s and 40s Germans and pass the blame, but would any of us be a Janusz Korczak, a Maximilain Kolbe or even a Jozef and Wiktoria Ulm (put our children’s lives at risk for helping others)?

If we create in humans such that all of us would do a Korczak, a Kolba, an Ulm act - that would raise us as humanity

Also that Hitler is treated like a sort of scapegoat for the culpability of the average German. “All Hitler’s fault”, but really the Germans knew quite a lot, and did know most certainly about the marginalization of the Jews.

The average German at that time knew. Churchill and FDR and the allied leadership by 1943 KNEW.

Blaming just Germans hides the monster among us all - Chaim Rumkowski, Rudoff Hoss the commandant of Auschwitz who was a decent man before the war and descended step by innocent step to becoming the monster -- I strongly urge EVERYONE to read the book Hanns and Alexander how the slippery slope to hell starts with one foot.

Rudoff Hoss the commandant of Auschwitz who was a decent man before the war

After the Armistice of 11 November 1918, Höss completed his secondary education and soon joined some of the emerging nationalist paramilitary groups, first the East Prussian Volunteer Corps, and then the Freikorps "Rossbach" in the Baltic area, Silesia and the Ruhr. Höss participated in the armed terror attacks on Polish people during the Silesian uprisings against the Germans, and on French nationals during the Occupation of the Ruhr. He joined the Nazi Party in 1922 (Member No. 3240) after hearing a speech by Adolf Hitler in Munich.

On 31 May 1923, in Mecklenburg, Höss and members of the Freikorps attacked and beat to death local schoolteacher Walther Kadow on the wishes of farm supervisor Martin Bormann, who later became Hitler's private secretary.[14] Kadow was believed to have tipped off the French occupational authorities that Höss' fellow Nazi, paramilitary soldier Albert Leo Schlageter, was carrying out sabotage operations against French supply lines. Schlageter was arrested and executed on 26 May 1923; soon afterwards Höss and several accomplices, including Bormann, took their revenge on Kadow.[14] In 1923, after one of the killers confessed to a local newspaper, Höss was arrested and tried as the ringleader. Although he later claimed that another man was actually in charge, Höss accepted the blame as the group's leader. Why does Germany get all the blame, when Hitler was an Austrian, and Austria supplied many of the hardcore members of the SS.

The Austrian Nazis were so over-the-top, that even before the Anschluss the Germans had to tell them to lighten up a bit.

Yep, the thing is you have to realize only those who joined the Nazi Party early on were going to get that kind of Command. And if they were involved in the Party in the early 20s, it’s a good bet they engaged in some kind of political violence, either as a member of the Freikorps or the Party.
