Attorney General William Barr testified Wednesday that he would rather see marijuana legalized nationwide than let states continue to defy federal prohibition.
Speaking during a hearing on Capitol Hill, Mr. Barr told members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee that conflicting federal and state marijuana laws have created an intolerable situation for the Department of Justice. would prefer one of two approaches rather than where we are, Mr. Barr told lawmakers.
"Personally, I would still favor one uniform federal rule against marijuana but, if there is not sufficient consensus to obtain that, then I think the way to go is to permit a more federal approach so states can make their own decisions within the framework of the federal law and so were not just ignoring the enforcement of federal law.

PING!
I see the point, I see the point, that we will go around in circles on this issue. On the one hand marijuana is illegal under federal law, but on the other hand, many states have legalized marijuana use either for medical reasons or just plain recreational use. How does that reconcile? If nothing else it keeps attorneys busy.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the founders of this country would have been appalled at the idea of a Drug Enforcement Agency.
Cracking down on them all is simply not an option. Time to end the feds' unconstitutional War on Pot.
would rather see guns banned nationwide rather than let states continue to pile gun control laws on top of more gun control...
Let the states decide.
My extra weight, those who smoke and DWIs will cost the taxpayers a lot more than a marijuana smoker likely will.
And like folks tell me about NY, if your state passes it and you don’t like it, move.
I’m getting very close to packing up and moving to PA

Which position has the Constitution on its side, in your opinion?
Wickard v Filburn's "substantial effect" test would have made them puke - and then fetch their ropes.
An AG with brains.
Legalize at the Federal level, then states can address it as they please.
I see this as a states rights issue. Let the states decide.
Somewhere in Alabama Magoo has steam coming out of his ears.
That's the constitutional position - which some right-statists find uncongenial.
Marijuana is like same-sex marriage. Once states start legalizing it, a domino effect begins.
Basically, the Feds have decided to ignore their own laws. They need to legalize it and let the states/communities decide as they do with alcohol.
...and now what does the Left do? Barr is pushing to make their DREAM COME TRUE - in the legalization of pot.
...but Barr is making their NIGHTMARES COME TRUE, in exonerating Trump, and then turning his sights to coup plotters.
My stars! What’s a Leftist to? (bobby pins please)
When they legalized Marijuana in washington state, my daughter (who lives there) said that the next day a lot of employers did a random drug testing sweep, after an evening of proponents of the measure “celebrating” its success.
You know how hard it is to fire bad employees these days? Well, a lot of ‘em tested positive for Marijuana, which is still federally illegal, and they were promptly and completely legitimately fired.
It was a huge house cleaning opportunity for a lot of employers.

The Feds have zero Constitutional authority to regulate marijuana if its produced in a State for personal use and never crosses a State line. Id argue even further that the Feds cant regulate what people willingly put into their own bodies. The 9th and 10th Amendments are quite clear on that.
Too bad the Courts have rendered both dead letters.
Wickard v Filburn needs to be revisited by the Courts and thrown out entirely.

Until we change the federal law, the feds should crack down hard on these states selling narcotics. The Federal law preempts state marijuana laws 100%. Barr is exactly right!! This guy is becoming an Icon.!!
Agree. Pot, booze, tobacco, abortion...state rules. Guns are a different thing with 2A.
Has any state in the union set a legal limit for THC in the bloodstream of drivers, anyone know?
Until that’s done, seems to me like we’re putting cart before the horse.
