When they legalized Marijuana in washington state, my daughter (who lives there) said that the next day a lot of employers did a random drug testing sweep, after an evening of proponents of the measure “celebrating” its success.

You know how hard it is to fire bad employees these days? Well, a lot of ‘em tested positive for Marijuana, which is still federally illegal, and they were promptly and completely legitimately fired.

It was a huge house cleaning opportunity for a lot of employers.

Well I mean they didnt need a state or federal policy to clean house. A private business can drug test/make personnel decisions based on anything they like if they reside in an “at will” state like Washington. An employer can fire an employee for any reason or no reason.
