NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A New Hanover County man was arrested on animal cruelty charges after he allegedly failed to provide fresh water and food to his pet fish and abandoned it after he was evicted from his home last month.
Michael Ray Hinson, 53, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals and one count of abandonment of an animal. He was given a $4,000 unsecured bond and later released from jail.
Lt. Jerry Brewer, spokesperson for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, said Hinson was evicted from his home on Two Chopt Road on Friday, March 22. Deputies with the agency’s civil unit went to the home the following Monday and noticed that Hinson left behind an Oscar fish that was in poor health and swimming in a dirty tank.

Oscars are a pretty common fresh water tropical fish that can grow rather large, two or three pounds depending on tank size and can live 10 - 20 years. Mine were quite tame and would really put on a show to get some treats - ended up selling them back to the fish store when I had to move. This idiot might have tried that first.

If you will contact a Mr. Jussie Smollett, he could probably hook you up with someone who would know how to get the charges dropped. Depending, that is, upon who you voted for in 2016, and your celebrity status. Correct skin color and sexual orientation of a certain type, apparently carry a bunch of bonus points, too. If you do not meet the demographics as spelled out above, then you are a hideous monster who needs to FRY, for your heinous crime, you horrible person.

He was evicted from his home! That usually means they change the locks and tell him if he’s caught around the place he will be arrested for trespassing.
Did he even have the opportunity to go back and get his fish, or was he humiliated and kicked to the curb?
Hardly a time for a person in trouble to worry about a fish.
I believe it was an Oscar, not a sole.
There are so many Asian restaurants on the west coast that they are having to fly dogs and cats from the shelters in Texas to re-stock the shelters in the West Coast states.
I wonder if one of the benefits, if not a purpose of Jewish Ritual Sacrifice was to remind people that the meal you are eating was once a living creature.
I’m not vegan, or vegetarian or such, but would it be a bad thing if people had to actually participate in the death of something that was to become their food?

I have great knowledge of these “Oscar” fish.
They are from the Cichlid family of fish and you would be hard pressed to find a more aggressive or nasty fish. The grow to a huge size close to 20 inches and at that size can take a finger off if you are not careful. You cannot put them with any other fish and expect those fish to survived.
As for them being harmed by neglect, well you would be hard pressed to hurt them with a baseball bat and they will survive great extremes in an aquarium environment.
