If President Trump follows through with his threat to close the Southern Border with Mexico this week, say goodbye to your avocado toast.
A top distributor and grower of avocados has warned that the U.S. would run out of the fruit in three weeks if imports from Mexico are halted amid any possible border shutdown.
You couldnt pick a worse time of year because Mexico supplies virtually 100 percent of the avocados in the U.S. right now," Steve Barnard, president and chief executive of Mission Produce, told Reuters. "California is just starting and they have a very small crop, but theyre not relevant right now and wont be for another month or so."
It wouldn't just be the ripe fruit affected by any potential disruption in trade. Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture reviewed by Reuters.
But the growth and popularity of avocados as a healthy dietary choice may catch the attention of Americans if there's any large-scale disruption.

At one time there was talk of super ports in west coast Mexico to receive all the shipping containers from China (avoiding expensive California ports). Then trucking all the stuff to US.
Not sure how that’s going.
and even if we did... so what?
And this would be a problem how?
Ask not what your avocado can do for you. Ask what you can do for your avocado. /sarc.
Florida avocados taste better anyway.
Doesn’t global warming mean we now have the same climate Mexico used to? Should be easy to raise them here.

No problem.
Let’s create policy that eventually makes a net exporter and the biggest competitor Mexico has....
Oh noes, no avocados.
Like I was telling someone erarlier:
“Big Deal. We are so rich with food, we can afford to throw it away and will find something else to eat in the meantime”
This may be the most stupid article I’ve seen in a long time.
Well there’s a reason to let virus strains we can’t fight and MS13 members and God knows who or what else into the country.
Avocados
Sounds like Mexico needs to get busy and fix this problem
I think I was 12 or 13 when I first ate avocado, and didn’t think very highly of it. Now I like them OK, but I wouldn’t care that much if I couldn’t get them. If that’s the price to pay for stopping illegal immigration, I’m good with it.
I think we can survive without Mexican avacados. Aren't they unhealthy anyway?
Have some broccomole...
Taste like Shiite but, it’s an alternative:

“It would have a bigger impact on Mexico...”
BINGO! Their economy will hurt from it WAY more than ours.
I’ll survive.
And I love avocados.
Avocados would rot quicker than that! I have a tree, this side of the border. From just picked to the table is about six days. The gassed ones from Mexico, if there gassed in Mexico, will rot like a democrat!
Out here, almost all tomatoes sold in supermarkets are from Mexico—even in upscale and health-oriented markets like Sprouts, Mother’s, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. So if the Mexican border is closed, they’ll have to get their tomatoes from the good old USA.
Oh the horror! What would we do without guacamole!
