America would run out of avocados in weeks if Trump shuts border with Mexico, grower warns

If President Trump follows through with his threat to close the Southern Border with Mexico this week, say goodbye to your avocado toast.

A top distributor and grower of avocados has warned that the U.S. would run out of the fruit in three weeks if imports from Mexico are halted amid any possible border shutdown.

“You couldn’t pick a worse time of year because Mexico supplies virtually 100 percent of the avocados in the U.S. right now," Steve Barnard, president and chief executive of Mission Produce, told Reuters. "California is just starting and they have a very small crop, but they’re not relevant right now and won’t be for another month or so."

It wouldn't just be the ripe fruit affected by any potential disruption in trade. Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture reviewed by Reuters.

But the growth and popularity of avocados as a healthy dietary choice may catch the attention of Americans if there's any large-scale disruption.

Fallbrook, CA used to be the avocado capital of America, until all the wealthy people started buying up property for large homes away from the city and slowly but surely all the avocado trees started disappearing and we turned to messico for them like so much other produce we used to grow for ourselves. One other thing that pushed growers out was the outrageous cost of water. I wonder how long until the last almond grower is driven out of business in California.

Gaia worshipers putting crappy little fish and rodents that live in other palces above people.

last week I decided i”d only buy US grown produce (not US distributed grown other countries).

The heck with saving a few cents/dollars or always having full selection of produce.I’ll have enough choice from US grown fresh or US grown frozen veggies.

I’m no longer supporting Mexico or guatamala or wherever they ship produce in from.

Please keep us updated on your efforts. I look at produce sources every time I go shopping. Very little US sourced in the dead of winter.

Remember when the options were seasonal vegetables and fruits in the Grocery Store?"

That's the healthy way to eat. Do you remember having strawberries in December? I don't. Oranges at Christmas was a treat.

“Let’s see if the fruit will run out in 3 weeks if the border is shut down. “

My bet is that the border won’t be closed for three weeks in total, because Mexico will cave within that period of time. Mexico is parasite country that is like a remora attached to America. The country will fold quickly without American cash. And when Trump closes the border, he should also cut off the ability of Mexicans here to send money home. When Jose fruit picker here learns that he can’t send money to his Aunt Griselda in Mexico City, he’s going crap his pants.

Just today I got california carrots, Idaho red potatoes, SWest grown minneolas. CA grown organic Kale. CA dates. I wanted to buy berries but all were Mexico or only said “distributed by” company in CA, same with lettuce.

A while back I gave up Amazon shopping and buying much made from China in local stores. It’s a little rough at times but I am determined to not be part of the problem of supporting countries that hate us and treat us poorly or flood into our country and suck money from our govt helps.

Too many US citizens have bought into I need, I have to have - in off seasons, or it’s already here anyway so I may as well buy it......we feed the beast and wonder why now it’s out of control and attacking us.

I got a bunch of US citrus (grapefruit, lemons, some organges when they were cheap) in Feb/March and juiced and froze in ziplock bags so now I can have fresh tasting citrus juice later in the year when it’s outa season for US grown.

As US grown Berries come in season I’ll watch for sales and wash and freeze them. I can’t always get organic but do what I can to eat healthier and now more than ever support USA not our enemy’s.

I would avoid eating ANYTHING from mexico (and not go to mexican restuarants forever) if it helped President Trump defeat the malignant anti-Free-America forces.
