US officials said on Monday that Washington has stopped delivery of F-35 fighter jet parts to Turkey in response to Ankara's decision to move ahead with the purchase of a Russian surface-to-air missile system, The Associated Press reported.
The officials spoke anonymously to discuss the decision before it was announced.
Ankara's push to buy the systems from Moscow has caused tensions with the US, its NATO ally.
Military experts are concerned that the deployment of S-400s would put the security of allied weapon systems, particularly F-35 aircraft and radar facilities, in danger.
The US believes the S-400 sale is part of Russian efforts to disrupt the alliance amid Western concern over Erdogan's burgeoning relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The US has been warning Turkey for months that buying the Russian S-400 system would jeopardize its planned purchase of the advanced fighter aircraft. The halt in the delivery of parts and manuals is the first step toward ending the actual aircraft sale.
A top US general said last month he would recommend that the United States withhold delivery of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey if Ankara goes through with the purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system.
Mondays move comes just days after Turkey's foreign minister said his country was committed to a deal to buy the Russian system and was discussing delivery dates.
In January, Turkey rejected a US offer to cancel its purchase of S-400 missiles from Russia. This came after a spokesman for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made clear that Turkeys purchase of US missiles will not affect its deal to acquire rival S-400 missiles from Russia.

Now why would the US be selling F-35’s to Turkey in the first place?!?!?
The money! The stupidity! And the money!
This was a stoppage of sending spare parts. When and by whom were the original F-35s sold? Glad to see them cracking down on Erdowan. Of course, he may now try to buy the F-35 equivalent from Russia, which we may also not like unless we prefer to make Putin happy.
F-35’s suck and don’t work so it seems like a good idea to me.
Looking back now, it seems like an ill-conceived part of the post-Cold War "victory lap"... procurement bureaucrats gone mad.
The spare parts have to be in place before the aircraft are delivered. Turkey’s F-35s are currently in Texas and their pilots and support crews are training on them in anticipation of their transfer to Turkey.
Pre-Erdogan and the Islamic Fundamentalist tilt..., Turkey was a valued NATO member. Now, after purging thousands of the military who were secular and Western oriented..., it is but the proverbial "Camel's Nose Under the NATO Tent"
Turkey is NOT a friend to the USA!!!
Get our sh!t outta Turkey!
now pull the fudging nukes
If detected with regularity, one helluva advertising coup to tell other countries interested in the S-400 and countering the US or allies.
The real question is why a NATO “ally” buy a Russian air defense system? Why are they still in NATO?
Russia is just China’s henchman.
China is ten times richer than Russia and Putin bows to it’s call.
Turkey sees profit, just like Russia and Iran, in answering China’s beck.
And they’re partly right to do so.
Collusion - YES!
That and Turkey has a destiny with Russia, Iran, Libya and Sudan via Ezekiel 37 & 38 very very soon.
On the mountains of Israel they will fall and the vultures will devour them (Ezekiel 39).
Believe me, Erdogan is sharing F-35 data with Russia.
I was stationed in Turkey back in the early 1970s, and it was a sh!thole country even back then.
Turks, in tactical jets...over Texas. Sounds legit.../s
