Hagia Sophia to Be Turned Into Mosque in Response to US Shift on Golan - Erdogan

ANKARA (Sputnik) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday he planned to turn landmark Hagia Sophia, a former Greek Orthodox cathedral in Istanbul, into a mosque after this month’s elections in response to the US policy shift on the Golan Heights. "After municipal elections, it [temple] will be converted back into a mosque from a museum. As US president Trump declares Jerusalem the capital of Israel and the Golan Heights an Israeli territory, Turkey will give an adequate response as the rotating chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation", Erdogan said while aired on television.

The statement comes after US President Donald Trump said last week it was time to recognise the Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, an Israeli-occupied strip of land in Syria.

United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov, on screen, addresses the Security Council, from Jerusalem, at United Nations headquarters, Friday, Dec. 8, 2017.

He signed a declaration to this effect on 25 March. The temple was turned into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of the Byzantine Empire. It was converted into a museum by Turkey’s secular founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1934 and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Greece has condemned Erdogan’s plans for the former cathedral as a sign of disrespect.

He’s been talking about doing this for YEARS. BUT the NYTimes and CNN will parrot the Islamic Nazi’s Golan talking points anyway

Yes, they have a horrid history but that history is of an empire era. That era is long gone. That era of the Armenian genocide is also wrapped in the ideology of Nazi Germany. Again, it’s long gone and should stay that way. That part of Turkey’s history is in the past just as Germany’s history is left to the past.

The Turkey that has existed from the defeat of Nazi Germany to the appearance of Erdogan has been one of a peaceful people, most of the educated demographic have been more secular and the Muslims in large part have been more inward looking.

All this was brought about by the reforms under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Yes, he was brutal to Muslims, but he wanted them to conduct themselves in a secular manner because he realized their customs kept Turkey behind militarily and technologically. He effectively transformed Mohammadism into a form palatable to Europe.

There is a reason why Turkey was allowed to become a part of the NATO Alliance.

The Armenian Genocide is still in a process of justice resolution. Turkey may yet be required to pay in gold for the crimes of their historical forbearers.

In the meantime, the average Turk is pleasant and polite. They are far removed from the people that committed heinous crimes against others. Their friendliness is welcome. It needs to stay that way and Erdogan is not helping.

NATO related. Regardless of who it is, there will always be an advisor in that capacity as long as they are a member.

They may be kicked out or Erdogan may be kicked out. It’s not wise to act impulsively; best to wait and see.

Flynn is a patriot.

He better ask Putin about this plan to turn the most holy site in Orthodox Faith into a Mosque. He might object. Will NATO defend Turkey if Russia attacks—Maybe not. Russia’s got the ships to make Turkey pay for their arrogance.

Putin’s an old KGB man—an “accident” could happen to Erdogan, maybe his palace could blow up mysteriously, like a “Gas Leak” or maybe a dash of podium in his tea. Or a mad man might shoot him at his next speech? Anything can happen if Putin wants it.

Please let this remain a Catholic/Orthodox Church. Well, I think we lost that chance in 1453. That's only 566 years ago.

Putin didn't do a thing about his ambassador in Turkey, I wouldn't worry too much about it. But if some misfortune should befall that fezhead, oh well.

And to think Turkey begged the U.S. to advocate for it to be admitted into NATO. Fucking Kremlin-lovers need to be drummed out.

Many people, including myself, will never hold the Turkish people in high regard until they finally acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.

I have yet to converse with a Turk who acknowledges the Genocide. On the contrary, the Turks attempt to shift the blame to the Armenians and Russians.

Shameful.

You’re referring to heinous mass murders from more than a hundred years ago (1915-1917) under the Ottoman Empire.

Young people in Turkey today don’t have any connection with that history. Turkey today is not the Ottoman empire. It is much smaller and culturally distant. The culture and norms of the Ottoman Empire were driven out by Atatürk.

It is hard for example for today’s Americans to be connected with say the enslavement of millions of black Africans. We were not there, we are a different country, we are culturally distant.

Young people in Turkey today wear jeans, text on their smartphones, listen to rock music, and some obtain quality university educations. Yet Erdogan is trying to bring that society into a Fifth Islamic Caliphate. He’s the problem, not the Turkish people.

The same situation occurs in Iran.

If I had my preference, I’d like to see Istanbul once again called Constantinople and for Christian Bible teaching to persuade the people there to accept the truth of Christ. But I don’t think that’s realistic for now.

But if the world is given a choice between Turkish westernization in a secular society and the Islamic Caliphate plan of Erdogan, then certainly the world will pick the modern secular version of the society there.

We can expect that if westernized modern Turks who have integrity were to take power, they would review the region’s history and acknowledge the horror of the Armenian genocide taking it into the history books, teaching all young adult students of that horror and how it must never be allowed to happen again. But this will never happen while Erdogan is there.

So first things first, embrace the friendliness of modern Turks and support them however possible to get rid of Erdogan.

the building ceased being a church in about 1453. Since then it was a mosque until it was made into a national monument of sorts

It was I think a mosque longer than it was a church
