Parliament Grabs Control of Brexit From a Wounded Theresa May
The New York Times ^ | March 25, 2019 | Stephen Castle

LONDON — Britain’s Parliament grabbed control Monday of the government’s efforts to leave the European Union, challenging the country’s political traditions and inflicting on Prime Minister Theresa May a rebuke not suffered by any recent predecessor.

By stepping into the process known as Brexit and trying to define an alternative path, lawmakers could create a constitutional showdown in Britain, where the government normally controls the agenda in Parliament, especially on its most pressing issues.

Parliament passed an amendment giving itself the power to vote on alternatives to the government’s Brexit plan. Its attempt to take control of the process came as Mrs. May prepared for a last-ditch effort to persuade lawmakers to support her withdrawal plan, which has already been rejected twice by huge margins.

....

Mrs. May’s grip on power is ebbing, with members of her cabinet openly discussing contradictory Brexit policies, rumors swirling of a plot to replace her and several of her Conservative Party lawmakers calling on her to name a date for her departure from power. She has already said she will not lead the party into the next general election scheduled for 2022.

The latest maneuvers come at the start of a week that was supposed to see Britain leaving the European Union, something that Mrs. May had promised more than 100 times would happen on March 29. Instead, Britain will remain at least until April 12, though what happens thereafter is anyone’s guess at the moment.

Yes, but she is coming on stage "dancing" to the dulcet tones of Dancing Queen. I suspect the choice of song is her being self-deprecating since her dancing is akin to someone trying to maintain their balance on a boat in stormy seas.

What I do not understand about this is, how could it be more obvious that this government does not have the confidence of the House?

The Westminster system has a lot of advantages, but for it to work the participants have to play by the rules, even the unwritten ones.

Even after winning a “vote of confidence”, the lack of confidence is screamingly obvious.

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;

Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,

God save us all! .

I think it's very clear as you say, that it doesn't.

And if Jeremy Corbyn wanted to be Prime Minister right now, the Opposition would be making a big deal of it.

But he doesn't want the responsibility for solving this mess, so...

As long as she wins a vote a confidence, she remains in power.

the March departure date is not a joke, it was the UK’s set date — England-Wales is going out by May 7th latest. I hope with a no deal Brexit

Led by a country that twice tried to destroy their country.

Romania????

Romania currently holds the EU Presidency

And in WWI the German Empire didn't try to destroy the UK...

She wasn't put there by globalists - she was elected by the Conservative party. There was no real competition against her. Gove or Boris had zero chances of winning among the rank and file.

And May as a remainer said and did nothing in the campaign. She thought that Remain would win, but didn't want to make too much noise just in the outside chance that either Leave won OR (more likely then) that BoJo would take the opportunity to become PM.

she has been pushing her way to get the top job for decades and she sucks at it.

“And in WWI the German Empire didn’t try to destroy the UK...”

They did a pretty good job of decimating the male population of Britain... And the Spanish Flu which Came From The Trenches knocked Britain to their knees.

Tell that to the over one million British citizens that died.

700K British (UK and colonies) soldiers died during World War 1

WWI was a tragedy but it was not Germany trying to destroy the UK

“Romania currently holds the EU Presidency”

If you think Romania controls the EU you are off your rocker.

As I said above -- your facts are doubly wrong. In World war One 700K British and Empire citizens died. Not over one million, but 700K

secondly, in WWI the German Empire did not aim to "destroy the UK"

I would suggest picking up a good book on World War One history

Next, Germany doesn't lead the EU. The Germans have tried to get their way and failed a few times. And right now the EU is led by:

  1. the eu presidency is with Romania now, until Jun 2019
  2. the president of the EU council is a Pole - Donald Tusk
  3. The chief of the EU commission is a luxembourger

Read up first

Over a million soldiers died. Up to 1.2 million including civilians.

As I recall, the Brits joined the frogs on the continent to repel the Huns

The Brit mainland was never threatened.

On the Western front, France was the objective. Belgium was just in the way of the German attack

The German Empire didn’t even want to destroy France. They wanted to be the dominant land power in Europe. They would have been happy with a return to the status quo. Their whole reason for war was to protect Austro-Hungary & fear of Imperial Russia. The nations that wanted war were Austro-Hungary, Serbia & France in that order.

Austro-Hungary - Serbia went to war because there was always “Some damn fool thing in the Balkans”.

France - revenge for the loss of Alsace-Loraine. Treaty with Russia gave them an excuse.

Russia - protect their Slav brothers\co-religionists from the mean old Germans both the North ones (Imperial Germany) & the South ones (Austro-Hungary)!

British Empire - Protect Belgium, fear of the German High Seas Fleet, outdated policy of maintaining (somehow!) a balance of power on the continent - dates back to Marlborough.

If Russia & GB had stayed out of it, it would have been another Balkan shoot’em up. No WWI, no communism, no Nazism, no WWII, world would have been a better place.

WWI truly the greatest man-made disaster of modern times.

Germans put a naval blockade around England shoothin anything that moved. Being an island, that would destroy England if successful.
