Despite being the object of a huge amount of media attention, few people seem to know that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to be an entrepreneur and fell flat on her face. Her media pals certainly have no interest in publicizing the fact the she embraced socialism after she proved to be utterly, embarrassingly incompetent at earning her way. Monica Showalter asked the key question on these pages last summer: “Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's socialist fanaticism come from bitter failure in business?
Now, thanks to digging by the New York Post, we know that:
Brook Avenue Press, a company she founded in 2012 to publish children’s books in The Bronx, owes the state $1,870.36 in corporate taxes, public records show.
The state slapped the company with a warrant on July 6, 2017, two months after Ocasio-Cortez announced her candidacy to run against Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley for the district that encompasses parts of Queens and The Bronx.
The backstory on Brook Avenue Press:
She founded a publishing business at age 22, straight out of Boston University, called Brook Avenue Press, to promote the Bronx as a nice place in children's books, something that has already been amply done by Sesame Street which came up with the concept in the 1960s. She didn't found it out of nowhere, either, she was part of a hipster collective…where startups with supposedly great ideas and youthful owners, get together in one building financed by the state…and learn from each other as their businesses presumably grow. Hers was called the Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator.

But despite her promise to work with designers, artists and authors that really know the urban story and help develop stories for kids, The Post could not find any books the publishing house produced.
In addition to failing at developing any products that people would voluntarily pay money for, Ocasio-Cortez also failed to keep on top of her tax obligations, leading to her tax delinquency and eventual warrant issued against her company. In fact, it appears that she let the company go out of business, and promptly consigned it to the Memory Hole, leaving New York States tax collectors high and dry.
The state requires businesses to pay a corporation tax on a sliding scale based on revenue. The minimum payment last year was $25.
The company probably got numerous letters from the state and probably ignored them, one New York City accountant theorized.
Public records show the state dissolved the company in October 2016, which can happen when a business fails to pay corporate taxes or file a return.
The state Tax Department wont comment on individual companies but typically files warrants as a last resort after trying to collect money.
This would ONLY be national news if she were a Republican, since she is a Communist dingbat, not a peep

Her company owes the state $1,870.36?
Add that to the 24 billion she cost the state, when Amazon said adios.
I know it’s NY and all but it sounds like they never sold anything so no income so why do they owe taxes? Tax the air they breathe?
In AOCs defense... why would a company with no products and no revenues... owe any taxes?
envy + resentment against achievement by losers = socialists
Their twitter account has 2 followers with access to the tweets restricted to confirmed followers.
Can anybody find a book that they published?
Typical socialist. She produced nothing, and is a deadbeat.
Why is New York State funding hair-brained start-ups?
Oh, never mind.
In Ma, a corporation has to pay a franchise fee of something like $450 per year just for existing in the state. So, if you start a corporation and forget about it, fees accumulate until you tell the state you are closing it. I don’t know the situation in NY, but I can see how fees could add up if you’re sloppy and forget that you started a corporate entity.
Yeah, her first venture as a capitalist failed and she owes the criminal tax collecting state the whopping sum of 18 hundred dollars. Her next venture seized the congressional seat of a long time favored apparatchik of the democrat party in the most important state in the nation and she is currently the de facto leader of the democrat party in Washington.
What a loser, right? Say what you want about her and her politics but if we were honest, many of us would admit that we are just a little bit envious of her success. Shes 29 years old and she is going places.
She’s going places, alright. And one of them
may be a spectacular flame-out. A case of
too much too soon. But it’s all to the GOP
good, so you go, girl.
Stupid question but how does someone who’s only job appeared to have been slinging drinks in an NYC bar start a publishing company?
