Californians’ water bills could climb after Trump’s FEMA won’t pay $300M for Oroville Dam

Millions of Californians could end up with higher water bills after the Trump administration on Friday announced that federal emergency officials aren’t going to reimburse the state for $306 million in repairs to Oroville Dam stemming from the 2017 spillway crisis.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said federal taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for problems that existed prior to a massive hole forming in the dam’s concrete spillway in February 2017, eventually prompting the two-day evacuation of 188,000 downstream residents and a $1.1 billion emergency response and repair job.

Oroville Dam – the nation’s tallest – is operated by a state agency, but it was built and maintained using funds from agricultural and urban water agencies that store water at Lake Oroville, such as the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.Metropolitan supplies water to more than 19 million people, whose water bills could rise if the federal government decides not to pay. In total, Oroville Dam water for 27 million Californians.

Since the 2017 crisis, the state and water contractors such as Metropolitan had hoped the federal government would cover up to 75 percent of the repair costs. So far, the federal government has only agreed to pay about a third of the total bill.

California’s got all the money in the world; this shouldn’t be a problem.

We already know the government will steal every cent. I don’t see any alternative other than to starve the beast.

Why should ALL the American taxpayers have to foot the bill for CA’s years & years of neglect on dam maintenance or years & years of the CA government being the Nation’s worst criminal enterprise...

Why reward poor statewide incompetence in responsibility for waterway maintenance?

Driving on interstate 5 in northern ca is an exercise in dodging potholes at 70 mph.

If every water customer chips in $1 per month...... presto $27 million

Out here in Tennessee we don’t think we need to pay for desert dwellers water. They knew it was desert when they moved there

Take the funds out of the budget for the “train to nowhere”, which has apparently now effectively ceased to be a viable project.

California has plenty of money they can move around from half-baked schemes back into REAL infrastructure rebuilding, if only they show the gumption to get their act together.

"They vote for the garbage."

Swamp Democrats and RINOs stay in power by making sure that voters cannot make informed decisions.

Californians may have to pay higher water bills after the rest of the nation refuses to subsidize California’s water.

72 years a Californian, and have seen it all, and had it with them all as well.

The Democrats have diverted taxpayer money for years for the purpose of buying votes, and voters be they legal, or illegal, and then turn around, and claim they need to raise our taxes to fix the roads we already have taxes to fix in each gallon of fuel we buy.

They use our property taxes for everything other than what they are supposed to be used for, and claim they need to raise the taxes to be able to pay for the infrastructure we are already paying taxes for.

There is nothing in this World worse than a Democrat politician. They lie, obfuscate, deceive, and bully the electorate to achieve their nefarious goals. Damn the Democrats is being polite.

CA is swimming in money, another poster told me on a forum.

If so, this dam fix should be slick as a San Fran sidewalk.

In total, Oroville Dam water for 27 million Californians.

The Sacramento paper would be better if they farmed out the writing jobs to China then used Google Translate to convert the stories to English.

It took two, yes, two illiterate reporters to write that mess.
