Californians’ water bills could climb after Trump’s FEMA won’t pay $300M for Oroville Dam

Millions of Californians could end up with higher water bills after the Trump administration on Friday announced that federal emergency officials aren’t going to reimburse the state for $306 million in repairs to Oroville Dam stemming from the 2017 spillway crisis.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said federal taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for problems that existed prior to a massive hole forming in the dam’s concrete spillway in February 2017, eventually prompting the two-day evacuation of 188,000 downstream residents and a $1.1 billion emergency response and repair job.

Oroville Dam – the nation’s tallest – is operated by a state agency, but it was built and maintained using funds from agricultural and urban water agencies that store water at Lake Oroville, such as the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.Metropolitan supplies water to more than 19 million people, whose water bills could rise if the federal government decides not to pay. In total, Oroville Dam water for 27 million Californians.

Since the 2017 crisis, the state and water contractors such as Metropolitan had hoped the federal government would cover up to 75 percent of the repair costs. So far, the federal government has only agreed to pay about a third of the total bill.

Don’t subsidize poor maintenance decisions.

Fema is for natural, not man made, disasters.

Where did the tax money they’ve been raising to take care of their infrastructure go? Why was the Oroville dam allowed to deteriorate for decades until it partially collapsed?

...wasn’t this dam in need of repair before the crisis a few years ago and Moonbeam deverted the money elsewhere?

CA should just feel lucky they dodged the bullet on a very possible dam breach and flood of the Central Valley.

Years of half-assed maintenance on the spillway allowed water to undermine it and caused the failure. I think they had the money, but were just to lazy/incompetent to maintain it properly.

Good call.

Oroville Dam
Built by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), Oroville Dam is one of the key features of the California State Water Project (SWP), one of two major projects passed that set up California's statewide water system. Construction was initiated in 1961, and despite numerous difficulties encountered during its construction, including multiple floods and a major train wreck on the rail line used to transport materials to the dam site, the embankment was topped out in 1967 and the entire project was ready for use in 1968. The dam began to generate electricity shortly afterwards with completion of the Edward Hyatt Pump-Generating Plant, then the country's largest underground power station.

A State project. If the U. S. Army of Engineers had built it I would say they had a valid complaint.
Looks like their electricity bills might go up as well.

Typical Sackocrapola Bee. Governor Moonbeam is the one who pulled the funding, not FEMA or Trump.

Thats a 1 time payment of $16.10. They’ll use it as an excuse to raise that rate by that much each month, and pocket the cash to use on boondoggles to save the snail darter, or some other mud bug, instead of capital improvements and repairs.

Trump is way too kind to his enemies. Federal forensic accountants should be analyzing just what happened to the $3.5 billion Federal subsidy to the abandoned rail project. Suspect he could lock up most of the California Democratic state office holders. Maybe even Schiff, Harris and Feinstein. It would be fun just to watch them scramble to hire lawyers.
