Analysis: GOP senators struggle to escape no-win border vote

WASHINGTON (AP) — One by one, the Republican senators floated their ideas. They were trying to find a way out of a seemingly impossible dilemma: how to support President Donald Trump's U.S.-Mexico border wall without approving the national emergency declaration he invoked to build it.

And one by one, during a private lunchtime meeting that ran hot at times, they found no easy answers.

As a deadline for voting looms, it's increasingly clear that Republican senators are deeply uncomfortable with Trump's use of executive power to build the wall and desperate to devise a way around the vote.

Senators know whatever they decide will make history. It's the first time Congress is voting to terminate a national emergency. Even if Trump vetoes the measure, as expected, it will set precedent for other money grabs by future occupants of the White House.

This is why they tried to talk Trump out of invoking national emergency powers and why they're now in a no-win situation as they prepare to vote.

"People are caught between the need for border security — and agreeing with what the president's trying to do — but not how he's trying to do it," said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the senior-most Republican senator.

In the days ahead, senators will be required to vote on a resolution, already approved by Democrats in the House, to terminate Trump's executive action.

Senate Republicans don't have the votes to stop what Trump is doing, nor do they necessarily want to. Many of their constituents want the wall, and senators, especially those up for re-election in 2020, don't want to run afoul of the president whose supporters they'll need.

No. What GOP Senators are uncomfortable with is being forced
to go on record as open border globalists.
Some like Tillis are up for re-election in 2020.
Plenty of time to find credible challengers.

not only is the president of USA charged with .. as his number one duty.. the protection of this country... as our Constitutional commander in chief (and remember who was our very first President when our Constitution was adopted... Army of the USA General George Washington)

but, Congress has specifically authorized presidents to declare national emergencies

AND, other presidents have declared emergencies for things FAR FAR less important... including things that were NOT Constitutionally-mandated like this is

these Senators need to take a bonehead American Civics class

(PS: where where they when Hussein Obama shipped $150 BIllion in cash to his bff Moslem terrorist dictators in Iran?)

Looks like the cartels bought everybody. The parties only differ in the excuses they offer.

This is why I hate Republicans.

They act like Conservatives when out of power.

Give them power to do something to make the nation better and do right by the American people.....BAM, they turn into Democrats!

You’re a liar Senator. The Republican’s had control of the House and Senate, but they never got done what needed to be done.

Why were these pukes so comfy when Obama, the first Socialist President, churned out 13 emergency declarations, most of which are still in force? Any Republican that votes with Upchuck Schumer and against President Trump should be defeated in the next primary they are in.

Bush League Republicans have made their life’s work blocking the citizens from stopping the illegal alien inundation.

They do not want us to stop the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA).
They are still working on amnesty for the 30 million people they invited here against the will of the citizens.

I understand that some are sending Queen Nancy bricks.

Can we start sending senators spinal parts from the butcher? Maybe they could figure out how to assemble them.

Grassley has had his moments, few and far between. Elected in 1980, he has had plenty of time and experience to fix border security. That it never happened and now is crossing President Trump reeks of rinoism.

Iowans, please throw the bum out.

..... If the Declaration of Emergency is not upheld It's the point that shall stand in history ...... That will Herald in the destruction of our Sovereignty and fall of the Nation of The United States of America ..... and the Useful Idiot RINO's for some reason are afraid that after the destruction the Socialists that will be running this country might actually use our final tool to stop them, to do something Unconstitutional to what will then have become ... The Socialist States of America

...... Gee ... How very noble of them to be so concerned ....

Has it even occurred to them, even for a fleeting second, to do what’s right for the nation?

Remember last December, when the GOPe still controlled the House, and how easy it would have been to give Pres. Trump the $5 billion for the Wall, but you Senators passed the CONRES **without** a wall and by voice vote?

You Sinators and Paul Ryano made the mess, weasel!

Maybe the real problem is, congress has never voted down, or even tried to vote one down before... the act is bad law, but you never cared to fix it.. so now you find yourself in a bind because you abdicated your responsibility for decades.0
