Ocasio-Cortez redistributes her staff’s incomes
American Thinker ^ | 02/24/2019 | Thomas Lifson

A young woman with no real-world experience is about to learn the hard way that her ideology is impractical.  I have to give Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez credit for sincerity in her announcement on Twitter that she plans to compress the pay scale of her staff, reallocating the budget she receives for staff, and cutting the pay at the top, while increasing the pay at the bottom. If she stays in office long enough, the consequences of implementing leftist cant will become clear to her (and us) over time, so it may be a teaching experience” (as former President Obama called it).  Stephanie Aiken of Roll Call sympathetically reports:

Claudia Pagon Marchena, like so many Hill staffers, moonlighted at a Washington, D.C., eatery to pay her rent until she took a job with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She celebrated her last day at her coffee shop job that same week.

That’s because Ocasio-Cortez, who has called on fellow lawmakers to pay their staffs a “living wage,” is making an example out of her own office. The New York Democrat has introduced an unusual policy that no one on her staff will make less than $52,000 a year — an almost unheard of amount for many of the 20-somethings whose long hours make House and Senate offices run.

For Pagon Marchena, 22, the pay bump meant an end to a grueling, seven-day-a-week work schedule that was wearing down her resolve to stay in Washington, where rents average more than $2,000 a month.

Congress, which loves spending taxpayers’ money, already is “studying” giving better pay to lower level staff (meaning increasing their own allowances for staff),

The half-baked socialist is a virtual whiz at spending other people's money.

That's her mother holding the Bible.....boyfriend is grinning tall guy on right with the beard.

She got caught putting her live-in boyfriend on the Congressional payroll.....
and the buzz is he's got top level security clearance over OUR SAFETY and SECURITY.

===============================

Taxpayers demand to see all of AOC's financial records as a member of Congress....outlays WE paid for.
We need to see AOC's correspondence, emails, snail mails, hard drives, wire-transfers, text files, offshore banking activity, and the like.

ACTION—Demand to see govt reports of all tax dollars outlaid to AOC, and everyone employed in her office.......including her boyfriend and family members.

ACTION--DEMAND CONGRESS SEND YOU ALL AVAILABLE GOVT INFORMATION specifically govt vouchers submitted by AOC:
<><> credit cards,
<><> gift cards,
<><> cell phone/landline bills,
<><> electronic/wire transfers,
<><> detailed expense accounts,
<><> transportation expenses
<><> office expenses
<><> office equipment expenses
<><> office supplies,
<><> unusual stamp purchases (a classic govt corruption MO)
<><> housing allotments,
<><> clothing allotments,
<><> entertainment
<><> household help,
<><>reimbursements for varied ancillary interests.

==================================

ACTION-—TAXPAYERS DEMAND TO KNOW WHO IN THE AOC PERSONAL AND GOVT CIRCLE IS CASHING GOVT PAYCHECKS, WHO HAS APPLIED FOR GOVT PENSIONS, AND WHO SHE MIGHT HAVE PLACED ON THE GOVT PAYROLL.It’s an old trick politicians use-—hand-picking people and putting them on several govt payrolls. (Long after you think they’re gone, they’re still cashing in). These maneuvers leave a huge paper trail.

AOC gets paid twice as much as her highest paid aid. She should be asked if that’s equitable. She could have redistributed 50% of her salary to make things fair.

Ocasio-Cortez has no concept of her ignorance.

The takeaway line from the Lifson piece. She doesn't have a clue. She will learn. The only questions are how fast, and whether the learning process will be ugly, painful or funny. Or all three.

Sounds like a pattern...

“At the end of the night, when it came time to split the $560 in tips she had gotten at the bar, Ocasio-Cortez gave the waitress only $50. After the waitress complained to her manager, her take was doubled to $100, a source said.”

If she really wants a true Socialist utopia, she needs to redistribute her pay so that she makes 52K too.

Would mean something if she included her $174,000 salary in the mix.
Socialists only redistribute other people’s money.

Absolutely. A staffer (anybody) is as valuable as she is. And many probably do useful stuff, unlike AOC.

I may be wrong (and I probably am) but wouldn’t her staff be federal employees and not her employees? Wouldn’t they be paid according to whatever their position is on the government pay scale?

from the article:

“Even more importantly, the logic of equality doesn’t stop with her own salary, which is set by law at $174,000.”

So I’m assuming there’s not stopping her from taking $100,000 or so of that salary and distributing it equally as a bonus to her staff. But if I were them I wouldn’t hold my breath.

It is well known that an experiment on a small biased sample cannot be extrapolated to the larger population.

People who would agree to work for AOC under any conditions and that AOC would agree to employ are a very, very small sample. They are biased in favor of AOC. They will take one for the team.

Regardless of the AOC experiment it is illogical to assume that it tells us anything about the larger population.

...and cutting the pay at the top, while increasing the pay at the bottom.

No. The top is Cortez. She's not diverting part of her salary.

It's not a sacrifice unless you're doing it. President Trump donates his entire salary to worthy causes. Cortez donates other people's salaries...and her mouth.

she plans to compress the pay scale of her staff, reallocating the budget she receives for staff, and cutting the pay at the top, while increasing the pay at the bottom.

Egalitarianism abolishes causality in the earning of income, resulting in people doing too little, and it abolishes causality in the spending of income, causing people to be unconcerned about cost, resulting in people spending too much. The evasion of causality is one of the signs and symptoms of irrationality.

Why doesn’t she cut her staff in half and pay them double?

Her MRA is somewhere in the range of $1.2 million per year, it’s up to her how she spends it, under the 18 full-time employee limit. Of course should could add in her own salary and divide it up equally if she wanted to be a good socialist...

They are Congressional and Senate ‘employees’. They will have federal healthcare options, and the various deals that GS workers have.

The normal average for House and Senate staff members is 52,000 (2018 numbers). However, there is usually a chief of staff, who makes in the range of $65k to $78k (depending on the deal from their ‘boss’).

From what I remember in the 2010-2013 era around DC, the administrative staff (people who type the letters, and answer the phone)...are generally in the $30k to $35k range. In the DC region/Arlington...that’s marginally enough to survive.
