So concluded the historian Arnold Toynbee in his 12-volume magnum opus A Study of History. It was an exploration of the rise and fall of 28 different civilisations.
He was right in some respects: civilisations are often responsible for their own decline. However, their self-destruction is usually assisted.
The Roman Empire, for example, was the victim of many ills including overexpansion, climatic change, environmental degradation and poor leadership. But it was also brought to its knees when Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 and the Vandals in 455.

In my opinion we are on the fast track to a new dark age. Truth, objective science, rational thought, morality, are all being cast aside, and not by accident. The question is how to escape the s*it storm that is bearing down on us?
Just look at the eligible voter turnout for the last 100 years. The people who choose not to vote have dwarfed any single political party’s turnout in presidential elections for 100+ years. For state and local elections the people who choose not to vote generally outnumber all political party turnout combined. The truly horrific thing about it is that it would probably be much worse if all those people had been voting.
I don’t know if the kind of things that are happening now are a sign of impending doom or not. They are things that have never happened before. Could be a huge disruption right around the corner. But I guess I don’t see a reason we can’t just keep gently sliding down the cultural slope either.

I hear you and confess that I don’t vote in local elections unless they are already on the state/federal ballot. And even then, my vote is so uninformed when the candidates are non-partisan like judges and board members, my vote is essentially random.
One of the greatest threat is the destruction of basic truths. XX/XY means nothing, climate change is built on faulty models and faked data and elementary students are being taught that 2+2 doesn’t necessarily have to equal 4. When there is no ultimate truths, then truth is whatever the government says it is.
Oh yeah, locally I only vote for county stuff, but I really don’t know a thing about them, never think about them again normally. When someone is unopposed I just don’t vote.
