DeWine proposing 18-cent increase in state gas tax, generating $1.2 billion
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | February 20, 2019 | Randy Ludlow and Jim Siegel

Gov. Mike DeWine will propose an 18-cents a gallon increase in the gasoline tax to maintain and upgrade Ohio’s roads and bridges in the transportation budget he submits to lawmakers Thursday.

That would amount to a 64 percent increase in the state’s current 28-cent gas tax, which the state transportation director has said is insufficient for the state and local governments to maintain current roads or finish major new construction projects.

DeWine revealed the number Wednesday on WTAM in Cleveland. He did not disclose if the amount would be phased in over multiple years. He also did not discuss if the tax automatically would increase with inflation, though he has expressed support for that idea to ensure the tax’s buying power is not eroded over time.

The first-year Republican’s request would raise about $1.2 billion annually, with DeWine billing the new money as vital to maintaining safe roads and protecting Ohio’s economy. An Ohio motorist with a vehicle that averages 30 miles a gallon who drives 15,000 miles annually would pay an extra $90 a year if lawmakers approve DeWine’s request.

The proposed increase would raise about $725 million a year for the state’s highway and bridge network while generating about $480 million a year for local government street needs.

“You have to have a gas tax increase, there’s no doubt,” DeWine said Tuesday. “The day of reckoning is finally here and we have an obligation to face that.”

In 2013, Gov. John Kasich and lawmakers bonded against future turnpike revenue, raising $1.5 billion. The move masked the state’s gas tax revenue deficiency, and that money essentially ran out this year.

Farmers voting for subsidies did not know the dems would get their money back another way?

Funny how these people are ignoring the yellow vest revolt.

The trucking industry is actually a huge proponent of these fuel tax hikes, as long as the money is dedicated to highway projects.

Their carrier contracts make it easy for them to pass these higher costs directly on to their customers in the form of fuel surcharges.

Good post. You have to add the reduction in revenue from higher fuel efficiency over time, though.

Adding 18 cents to Ohio’s gas tax put its total tax per gallon at 64.4 cents. That would put Ohio tied with Hawaii as the forth highest taxed state in the nation:

California = 71.9
Pennsylvania = 71.1
Washington = 67.8
Ohio = 64.4
Hawaii = 64.4

Brilliant. Better order some yellow jackets.

LOL. That is exactly what I was thinking. I wonder if Kasich is asking, miss me yet?

Why do these a$$hats only talk about tax increases and NEVER about cost/expense control and reduction?

DeWine is nothing more than another swamp critter, certainly. But, this is ludicrous.

Why do politicians steal from the people and why do people elect politicians who steal from them? It is a sickness on both sides.

Why $5? Think of how much revenue would go up and the production of that eeeevil essential plant nutrient see oh too would go down at $50/gallon!

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is virtually everywhere in Ohio and not just patrolling interstates and highways. You can drive through, say Penn., and see one or two state LEOs. In Ohio, the flying tire on the door and the angry blue light bars are waiting for you almost every 10 miles or so from the border right down to the cul-de-sac where you live.

BTW, I think the federal government intentionally tries to keep 2% inflation. That means we lose 20% every decade,

That is how the federal government plans to manage a $22 trillion debt.

I’m tired of supporting people who don’t pay taxes or who can’t afford the taxes. They need to always pay their fair share.

Roads and infrastructure are the nerves and sinew that allows the state to exist.

Knee jerk reaction to a tax that pays for specific resources is foolish.
