I think they are angry and scared that the Trump admin may throw a hefty tariff on the cars they sell int he USA. That should worry them much more than having to pay their bills.

I hope you are right. The leadership in France, Germany, and the U.K. seems terribly weak right now. The Central parts of Europe are the only ones thinking straight.
Merkel was raised in East Germany. She was part of a Communist youth group. She studied in Russia and speaks Russian fluently. Putin was a KGB officer in East Berlin and speaks German. They have a lot in common.
I find it ironic that Trump is being accused of being a Russian agent and wanting better relations with Russia.
