California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that the state will no longer pursue plans to build an estimated $77 billion high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco because the project "would cost too much and respectfully take too long," per the AP.
The big picture: The project was years behind schedule with an estimated completion date of 2033. It had been hamstrung by political backlash in the state, and polling showed that a majority of Californians disapproved of the plan as costs ballooned.
Similar proposals for high-speed trains on the East Coast, including along the heavily trafficked Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., and Boston, have also fallen apart due to opposition and massive cost estimates, per the New York Times.
He can’t cancel the train. How will he get rid of the airplanes????
Someone’s pulling our leg, right?
That noise you hear is Willie Green shouting, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Well as a Central Californian, I see a bit of a silver lining and hope it’s true.
CA govt is going to have to face reality. They are out of cash and living on fumes. And taxpayers are leaving.
First month taxes shortfall already paying dividends.
Another victim of the El Chapo trial.
We could get rid of Davis Bacon and cut the costs in half. That’s not enough to justify the California boondoggle but it would change a lot of calculations on the Northeast Corridor.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is going to be pissed!
Hmmm...so what you’re saying is that the cronies that Gavin Newsom has to pay off are different than the cronies that Gerry Brown has to pay off.
The problem is the rail didn’t cross any oceans..as per the green deal.
Paging Willie Green.
Alexandria of Green New Deal fame will not be pleased.
So what does California have to show for the BILLIONS already spent? And what will they do with those abandoned parts?
Unions, politicians and the various organized crime groups (though certainly to a lesser extent than even 2 decades ago) just lost a lot of money.
Was Feinstein’s husband consulted beforehand so he could sell his land holdings before prices plummet?
The cronies must be taken care of.
Hey, you can be damned sure Tutor-Perini aka DiFi’s hubby’s firm got their chunk and so did a lot of lawyers, now what do they do with the chunks of stuff already built?
I met a traveler from an antique land,
Who saidTwo vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert...Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
