There were so many movies made on Kauai, but South Pacific used landmarks that are still identifiable today.
“There is Nothing Like a Dame” was filmed on the Hanalei Town Pier.
“Bali Hai” was filmed on the Na Pali coast using the pointy peaks of a cliff called Makana.
And “I’m gonna wash that man right out of my hair” was filmed on Lumahai Beach, which has a vicious riptide. (YIKES!)
A lot of Native Kauai People were extras in the movie, and, even though they have aged a bit, were awesome in the simple production that only had piano accompaniment. We ate with the cast and talked with the musicians after the show and had a WONDERFUL time.
I hope they are still showing this...I haven’t been there since 2013.

HAROLD ARLEN
EARL CARROLLS VANITIES OF 1932: I GOTTA RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES
This recording begins with a riff just like the opening riff in Damned for All Time from Jesus Christ Superstar with the clarinets turned into flutes. This 1941 recording is as sultry as it gets.

Fats Waller referred to him as God. There were few jazz pianists in his league.

Jo Stafford’s version is jazzier. :-)

Peggys decade was the Fifties where she was a major figure in jazz. This comes from the end of her Big Band days in 1949. If you listen carefully, you can hear her channeling Billie Holiday.
