For the first time ever, The Washington Post is airing a Super Bowl commercial during Sunday's game between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. The 60 second spot will air during the fourth quarter, shortly before the two minute warning.
According to the news outlet , the ad is narrated by actor Tom Hanks and the message focuses on the danger journalists face. The theme is, "Democracy Dies in Darkness." Hanks was chosen as the voice for the ad because of his role as former WaPo Executive Editor Ben Bradlee in "The Post," which focused on the paper's decision to publish the Pentagon Papers.
The ad includes Images of freelance reporter Austin Tice who has been missing in Syria for six years; freelance columnist Jamal Khashoggi who was killed at the Saudi Arabian Consulate in October; and American War correspondent Marie Colvin who was killed by Syrian forces in 2012.
The Super Bowl is a remarkable moment to recognize the courage and commitment of journalists around the world that is so essential to our democracy, said Fred Ryan, publisher and CEO of The Washington Post. We decided to seize the opportunity to make this a milestone moment in our ongoing campaign. This was a chance for a broader message about the role journalists play in our everyday lives and the risks they take to bring us the facts,
Although a spokesperson for The Post refused to say how much the news outlet dropped on the ad, CNBC reported that CBS is charging $5.25 million for a 30-second slot.
The ad is not currently online but WaPo said they will publish it on their website and social media channels once the Super Bowl game is over.
No images of Daniel Pearl? I wonder why that is?
Who’s telling publishers they can’t publish?
Most, or all, of the victim ‘journalists’ died or disappeared before Trump even started running for president, and Khashoggi was a victim of a hit-job authored by a foreign country.
So, how is the Washington Post and Hanks going to justify running an ad with a message which will be 100% ignored by the true evil people around the world? In fact, one could argue that, it’s the permissive attitude of journalists and liberal publications like the Washington Post which encourage the anti-journalist actions around the world.
Maybe they should show the CNN screen shot of Ralph Northam with a R next to his name........
“theyre (WaPo) running pro-Al Qaeda propaganda during the Superbowl and paying big money to do it”
Good post. Bears repeating.
“Enemy of my enemy is my friend” lines.
Perhaps if they ever recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag, they would realize we are a Republic.
Furthermore the word democracy is not found in the Declaration nor the Constitution. It seems the word is popular since it sounds sorta like democrat.
“”This was a chance for a broader message about the role journalists play in our everyday lives and the risks they take to bring us the facts,””
Spare us please! WHO and WHERE are real journalists today that are going to do this? Takes guts to make a statement like that with all the backtracking they’ve had to do of late and all the BS they’ve printed. There isn’t one solid genuine journalist today in our country. They’ve all gone on to more lucrative professions like MAKING THE NEWS!
Hey if they want to call Kashoggi a journalist they just demean their profession. He was a Muslim Brotherhood plant whose strings were being pulled by Quatar. If they want to be on that level, let them.
Makes sense, there are so many whiny ****s associated with this year's Super Bowl. Who pays the bills for the halftime entertainment [sic]?
How many will swallow it when liberal news media spits out some self-serving hate propaganda? Disappointing to see Hanks on the side of darkness.
There no doubt that SOME journalists in the hell hole countries are doing honest work in dangerous places.
BUT, the US MSMers are not amoung them.
About a gazillion times greater danger that they will get fired and need to learn some marketable skills than that they will get chopped up in one of their own country’s foreign consulates. (As BuzzFeed, McClatchy, HuffPost, Gannett etc workers learned over the last couple of weeks.)
And the rest of it is, I think:
“and Liberty is a well armed sheep.”
And Democracy dies when Republicans do not force the DemocRATS to live with it....evil prospers when good men do not rise to fight it. Big problem for our Republic.
someone should follow the WaPo ad with another entitled “When a Republic dies” and talk about when the fourth estate, the news, guardian of the first amendment, fails and becomes no more than a propaganda arm of a political party.
I may be wrong but I doubt many are going to swallow it and that’s mighty expensive advertising.
A good many people are interested in sports and the super bowl to get away from the constant political drum on TV.
They can spend all the money they want on crap ads. The US public will never again respect the media, or believe their junk journalism.
NO Forest, Democracies DIE from FAKE NEWS.
