I remember reading that while they were building the Alaska Pipeline they kept all the heavy equipment running all night during the winter because if they ever shut them down there'd be no way that they could be restarted.
#1 Why not Minot? It's Cold I'm Told.
#2 Why not Minot? Freezin's the reason.
#3 Why not Minot? Are you fu#&ing nuts??
I was 12 yrs old at the time. I do remember some epic blizzards back then - but the one you mentioned isn’t ringing a bell with me. Was it one of those late winter high school tournament storms?
Wow! Just last year I was considering Des Moines as a possible place to move to. I have serious doubts about being able to handle temps like that, since I’m SoCal born and raised.
Here in southern WI will be -25 tonight and -30 Wednesday night.
Actual air temperature.
Wind chills -50s.
They have closed everything including the malls in Madison.
The UW Madison is closed.
I agree, who said anything about wind chill?

Windy too.
Blowing around the 2 feet of snow we plowed/shoveled.
No need to kid, I went there. Saw it. Avg daytime temp in the winter was below zero and the wonderful winds from the north.
Move sunny Florida,, I live in New Smyrna beach and build new homes in Deltona 30 minutes away. A 4/2 new 2572 sf home on a small lake is only 249k , 45min to disney 45min to beaches.
We love it here, have a look at our weather. 67 n sunny

The only drawback is its very hot July and august. As for me I will take 3 months too hot over 5 months too cold.
Des Moines (most of it) is nice. So is Sioux Falls. if you hate snow and cold then yeah, these are not places to be. But keep in kind that this is really extreme cold. It’s not something we see too often.
Check into Springfield Missouri. I was there last fall and liked it. Fayetteville Arkansas was pretty good too.
Worry about the ice. Des Moines is on the ice line.
Thats the worst in 30 years and its only 2 days max!
Spring, summer and fall are beautiful here
-18 now, down to -31 by morning in western MN.
I may have to wear a jacket tomorrow.
Enough with the wind chill stuff. Its just to sensationalize.

If you work outside like I did my whole life the wind chill is very important to know. Add some wind to a cold day and it makes a tremendous difference.
“I saw it -30 one winter morning in Gunnison Colorado. It was cold.”
We stopped in Gunnison for the night, motel operator asked if we had plug-ins, so we hooked up. He told us to keep the dogs inside. The temps the previous evening had hit -60 and were expected to do it again. Told us a katabatic wind, starting up around Crested Butte, would start rolling down the valley as soon as the sun set, and it did. The next morning we waited until 10 to get started for the ranch. Temps hit -62 that night; a three dog night.
No mail tomorrow.
Just a slightly colder than average January day in North Dakota. -29 wind chill happens every winter there. Actual -29 happens more winters than not. Sometime.
When I grew up in the Fargo area, we rooted for the groundhog to see his shadow because 6 more weeks of winter WAS an early spring.

I spent 35 years there. We did not get mail today which happens now and again. Not even junk mail. So I just read that mail was not delivered in ND, SD or Minnesota due to the cold which they have named...Polar Vortex Jayden.
Yes, they are naming cold days now. When I lived in Fargo and it got brutally cold we didn’t have a special name for it. We ust called it ..........WINTER........
You know you’re living in the wrong state when 15 degrees feels warm...........
“...and people in Florida here are complaining that it hit 51 degrees today....”
Not me! I LOVE this cold weather and long for it during our long hot muggy summers here. One day of working in the yard has me wishing for winter. My neighbors think I’m nuts.
