The screenshots of an email sent by Dr. Megan Neely surfaced on social media Saturday.
In the email, Neely mentions faculty members picking out a small group of first-year students who they observed speaking Chinese in the student study area.
She wrote the faculty members wanted to write down the names so they could remember them if they were to ever interview for an internship or ask to work for a master's project.

She wrote the faculty members wanted to write down the names so they could remember them if they were to ever interview for an internship or ask to work for a master's project.
"They were disappointed that these students were not taking the opportunity to improve their English and were being so impolite as to have a conversation that not every one the floor could understand," Neely wrote.
Neely then urged international students to keep this in mind when speaking Chinese.

"That being said, I encourage you to commit to using English 100% of the time when you are in Hock or any other professional setting," Neely finished.

Sorry I see I included some of he story twice. My apologies.
Musta coached lacrosse.
Anyone else get the impression, that political correctness has become a cancer, a disease infecting every single facet of our lives???????
I worked with a Chinese engineer at my last job.
Lots of Chinese in the group.
In meetings, they would speak with each other in Chinese.
The engineer would remind them that they were in America, and that they had better speak English in front of all of us, out of respect for America.
“Anyone else get the impression, that political correctness has become a cancer, a disease infecting every single facet of our lives???????”
Noticed that a long time ago.
I also noticed, our side is doing nothing about it, they keep dishing it out and we keep taking it.
The Director of Graduate Studies says she has the “upmost” respect.
Yeesh.
Same here in my other meetings.
The only “conscious” Asians who would deliberately speak English in front of others would be the Filipinos and the Singaporeans so as not seem rude. The Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai etc are the worst. Manners are not prevalent with the other cultures.
Sorry I see I included some of he story twice. My apologies.

It didn’t show up in a preview prior to posting?
Learning English? Imagine that. A college encouraging the need to learn something. How appalling.
Arent they supposed to emphasize how evil the white race is?
Duke is so F’ed up...someone offering them some good advice and forced to bow and submit to the PC police...no foul...just execution!
It was not inappropriate for the director to advise them to speak English in most settings, but it is also not "disrespectful to America" to speak Chinese when among other Chinese. Everyone needs an occasional break, and the comfort of home, especially when home is far away.
Everybody does.
I must have missed that part. Where someone said speaking another language in college was disrespectful to Merica.
In the early 2000s, I made the acquaintance of a Russian Jewish woman who had a daughter in the same kindergarten class as my oldest son. I was once in her home, and she spoke English to her children even inside the home. She said it was very important to her that her children speak English first.
I’ve also known Eritrean and Ethiopian people that are extremely fluent in English. One Eritrean woman that lived next door to me had her sister and the sister’s daughter come live with her for a while. The little girl had grown up in Holland but within just a few weeks she was speaking English. She refused to speak the language of the Eritreans.
This guy straightened out the other Chinese in the (engineering) groups.
The problem was always with the Vietnamese factory operators. They would never speak English in front of my group of sustaining process engineers.
We called it getting “Smile Effed”
Yes it has! Sickening.
For a long time. But it’s getting worse. They are trying to make everything a crime and if not a crime you will lose your livelihood.
I previewed in a rush.
Yes I have. But I’ve never known a politically correct bullet.
