I worked with a Chinese engineer at my last job.
Lots of Chinese in the group.
In meetings, they would speak with each other in Chinese.
The engineer would remind them that they were in America, and that they had better speak English in front of all of us, out of respect for America.
Same here in my other meetings.
The only “conscious” Asians who would deliberately speak English in front of others would be the Filipinos and the Singaporeans so as not seem rude. The Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai etc are the worst. Manners are not prevalent with the other cultures.
Since this was at the Duke Med School speaking and understanding the language of instruction would seem to be a good idea. If this were ‘social sciences’ WTF.
Simply disgusting that this woman would be removed from their job.
Maybe the President should take note of this.
But I do recall Chinese in this country speaking English to me in my work experience.
Your account sounds exactly like my experience with Chinese nationals in this country.
The rep for our contract has informed the vietnamese staff to use English in the lab since coworkers do not know what is being said about them behind their backs. To no avail. It continues.
MEDICINE?
Just what all of us would eagerly sign up for——
A medical person who doesn’t speak English,
who might be prescribing your medications—
and making a diagnosis that affects your future health.
How many errors can possible occur with set of scenarios?????
NO THANKS-—I want a person well trained & who communicates in ENGLISH.
