A surge of arctic air is about to bring parts of the Midwest the coldest temperatures in years by the middle of this week, as part of the polar vortex is set to blast the region with dangerously cold temperatures.
The National Weather Service said in its forecast discussion that a "potentially record breaking push" of Arctic air will inundate the Northern Plains and Great Lakes by Wednesday, bringing wind chills as low as -40 degrees in many locations.
"There's no mild way of saying it. Brutal cold is coming," the NWS' Chicago office said on Twitter.

Due to the rotation of the earth, there’s almost always a polar vortex. Every so often, it slips out of its usual range and heads south. That’s what distinguishes it from the “Alberta Clipper” and other jet stream-driven cold fronts. The confusion arises because every excitable TV weatherman decides to spice up their reports with these slangy phrases.
I was discussing the winter of ‘83-’84 while out with some friends last night. That was a bad one. Tons of snow and a long brutal cold spell. If I remember correctly the temperature in the small town where I was going to school (Fairbury Ne.) only got above zero once in 22 days. The winds were very strong and the wind chills were in the -30 to -50 range. On Christmas morning 1983 it was -22 with a constant 35-40 mph wind when I headed out on the 26 mile drive to my home. I had a little Toyota Corolla and busted through snow drifts all the way home on the highway because the roads were drifting over. It was a miracle I didn’t get stuck and freeze to death. I was determined to get home for Christmas though.
I lived in an old house with a bunch of guys that year. The house was poorly insulated and didn’t have storm windows. I could see my breath in my bedroom when I woke up in the morning. My stepmom bought me an electric blanket that fall and that was a godsend. I had a brand new Die Hard battery so my car and one of my roommates cars were the only ones that would start. We had to jumpstart all the other guy’s cars every morning so they could get to school and work. Ahh good times......
My cousin has one of those “G” helmets from the Ice Bowl. After the game everyone was I. Such a hurry to get home, they just walked up to it, removed it from the wall and stuck it in their car.
I didn't hear anything about "the Polar Vortex" until last night and how "it's coming".
The weather guys didn't forecast yesterday correctly and what they're saying is coming isn't as bad as what we had.
Just trying to scare the chit out of everyone again.
Notice the world doesn’t come to an end even though the temperature varies120 degrees or more in some areas of the nation, over the span of just one year?
So much for the drama of the mean temperature going up 1.5 degrees over a century.
I live in Indiana. It’s been in single digits. I still see people in the store with shorts on.

OMG Polar Vortex coming down upon North America. It happens every year and it’s all about the Jet Stream and the angle of the Sun. It’s called WINTER folks.

Talked one of my sons in Michigan yesterday. It was late afternoon and he said it was 3 degrees. I asked him if he was going to move to the UP to retire.
Minnesotans are use to this type
of weather. Cold is cold.

Exactly! I’ve worked outdoors in the far north — including the Arctic. Any form of shelter — a tree, a snowbank, a wind-proof parka, a couple of convenient co-workers — will eliminate the “wind chill” effect. OTOH, if it’s 40 below with no wind, it’s cold no matter where you stand. (BTW, -40 can seem balmy, after a couple of weeks at -50 or below.) Wind chill advisories seem to be something cooked up to make weather reports more dramatic.
I always liked “Alberta Clipper”, it has a romantic ring to it.
Wind chill to make it “seem” colder, and then there’s the humidex nonsense.
I think the humidex was invented so cities like T.O. could pretend to have “tough” weather too.
Yep hard to forget that blizzard, it is the only time I saw every road get shut down for a day in the county (Hillsdale, Michigan). They only thing that got around was snowmobiles. The county Hospital had a whole team of snowmobiles to get the nurses and workers to work. It took three days before we saw a plow out in the county, 5 miles out of town. Snow everywhere, mostly drifted, unreal drifts.
I spent several years in North Dakota and Minnesota. I lived below zero for so long that 2 above felt tropical.
As someone who used to work out in those kinds of temperatures I can say emphatically that Spok hit the truth dead on.
By pulling out of the Paris Accord, Trump may have raised those low temps a bit.
