How the Rush to Condemn the Covington Kids Was Spurred By a New Type of Media Currency on the Right
Townhall ^ | January 22, 2019 | Kira Davis

By now we’ve all been subjected to the pathetic media malfunction surrounding the children from Covington Catholic School and their verbal abuse at the hands of grown adults. I was on vacation out of the country at the time and could only follow on social media. Having seen the initial video and the ensuing outrage, I felt concern but not much else. I’ve been at this long enough to know that the whole story is typically much different from the clipped version.

Admittedly I was a bit nervous that it might be true, but I’ve witnessed the media chaos in the wake of lots of tragedies. I’ve learned to hold my piece until the facts are in. The sad case of little Jazmine Barnes was only the latest example of a very sad story that turned into a national race battle because so many so-called journalists jumped to conclusions before they had the whole story. The media couldn’t wait to pin the Pulse shootings on a homophobic tea-partier. Of course the perpetrator turned out to be a radicalized Jihadist.

And so on and so on. It’s at the same thing, tragedy after tragedy.

Of course I expected the immediate outrage and blame to come from the left. After all, it’s what they do - speculate first and ask questions later. What dismayed me more was the reactions of conservatives. I saw many journalists and commentators rushing to condemn the child from Covington Catholic, chastising conservatives in the process. Some decided to tread lightly and only briefly addressed it. Many others put on the full mantle of rage, railing against those “problematic” #MAGA conservatives and scolding the right for not immediately condemning the behavior.

It disheartened me. If anyone should know better it’s conservatives. I guess I was wrong.

Spot on. The knee jerk attacks came the anti-Trump right as well. The MAGA hats was the trip wire.

this is a whole new tactic.

The media generates a crap storm.

The media imagines a right-wing response.

The media generates outrage at their imagined right-wing response.

The never Trumpers don’t want to admit they were wrong.

The narrative on this story allowed them to say Trump coarsened the discourse which proved they were right.

Many of them get funding from the establishment and they have to please their master.

They would prefer to Trump lose in 2020 so they can say they were right.

Are you sure you aren’t conflating conservatives with Republicans? True conservatives aren’t Never Trumpers or RINOs. And as such, would not have jumped on the kids for all the reasons you stated.

There’s nothing new about the fact that most humans are ‘herd animals’ and don’t think for themselves very much.

Punchline:

‘But it concerns me that is was so easy for so many on the right to rush to condemnation in the name of being able to say they’re the “good kind” of conservative.

‘Here’s a secret: you’ll never be good enough for the progressive left. There’s no need to sell out the average conservative reaching for a brass ring they’ll never let you hold.’

The Covington kids were hustled by experienced street theatre thugs. Apparently the people who run the school and the diocese are too politically correct, too delusions and too timid to protect them even when they know the truth.

Or quite possibly virtue signalers. I for one, am getting really sick of the virtue signalers who supposedly are on our side.

Missing from this story. People with badges. Is normal to go around the Mall calling children “faggots” and “crackers” without restraint? Does the National Mall have ay security at all, or can foreign enemies land helicopters their and deploy troops any time they like?

Conservatives in the media?

Lost me right there.

Conservatives were suspect on this from the get go. Those that weren’t, weren’t Conservatives.

That should clear up the confusion.

If anyone should know better it’s conservatives.

Well they are masquerading as such, but they often expose themselves as being nothing of the sort.

I’ve learned to hold my piece until the facts are in.

Yes, that's in the original story.

Townhall is a blog, obviously.

But haven’t the Never Trumper periodicals suffered financially, meaning lost subscribers? I do see your point, as *new* magazines opened immediately, but how much money is there on the left to constantly fund so many tangents in their desire to get Trump out of office? Obviously, a lot and also, much comes from an unending supply of government slush funds. However, the government is shut down enough to perhaps impede access to those funds? IDKI. Just guessing.

There is a strong fear of the left in this country.

There is fear of what the left will say about people if they violate political correctness.

There is fear of what the liberal media will say about people.

This is part of the initial reaction of the school and the diocese in criticizing their students, before more facts came.out. The fear of being on the wrong side of the leftists and media drives people to take actions to try to avoid being targets.

This rush to judgement was an orchestrated attempt to let the LIE get a jump start, while the media and never-Trumpers tried everything they could to deny the TRUTH to get it’s pants on - to bastardize an old saying.

Basically they didn’t just jump and push that this was the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, they even attacked those who said it “looked staged” or asked for “the context” or “how did this start” - all of which are perfectly honest and proper questions when doing any modicum of journalism (with integrity)!!

For National Review I wonder what percentage of their income is from subscribers versus outside funding.

I suspect most of the liberal groups funding comes from foundations, Soros, and other globalists rather than directly from the federal government.
