Doesn’t REALLY add up’: Tweep’s thread on Nathan Phillips’ claims of Vietnam service will(T)

Nathan Phillips is the Native American Vietnam Vet who many were claiming was attacked and harassed by a bunch of evil, white, Catholic, high school kids in MAGA hats at the March for Life on Saturday. As more information became available it seemed clear (unless you work for CNN) that Phillips was the one who instigated the ordeal and the kids really didn’t do anything.

Good times.

Interestingly enough, a few people on Twitter tried to connect the dots on Phillips’ claims of serving in Vietnam and this thread is especially fascinating. Note, we can neither confirm nor deny any of this is true or correct, but it’s definitely something worth reading through.

Provided without further comment.

If he is 64 he had join at age 17 in 73, when St Louis Records center burned and many MPFs were lost, thus plausible. He would show up at the VA if h.g.h ad any Benefits by using his last initial and last 4.

Yeah, when I requested my records I basically got another copy of my DD 214. Everything else. Gone. Proving anything to the VA concerning your time in ain’t quite as easy then. I have a VA card I was originally issued and when I went to the local VA 20+ years later they were like-—HUH? Nice huh?

***Mr. Nathan Phillips is affiliated with the Omaha Nation...***

So what is got his tail in the ringer? From what I have found, the US Army never fought a war with the Omahas but protected them and some smaller tribes from their enemies the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahos.

When I came back form VN in April `71 to Ft Lewis for

discharge we were told not to go into Tacoma in uniform

because of the danger of being attacked.

We rode in Army buses that had armoured wire protecting the

windows from rocks that could be thrown,or so said an E-7.

Then for the next 10 yrs there were crazed VN vets on all

the tv shows.

Still hate Uncle Walter and Jane Fonda.

I don`t believe the drummer guy is a VN vet.

"Allied Troop Levels - Vietnam

Year   American
1964   23,300
1965   184,300
1966   385,300
1967   536,100
1968   475,200
1970   334,600
1971   156,800
1972   24,200
1973   50

americanwarlibrary.com"

That aligns with the claim of service from 1972 to 1976.

The man is clearly mentally ill or dishonest, but he certainly might be a vet.

“The USMC was no longer in VN in 1973.”

The last Marine combat unit left July 1972.

Marine guards were in VN until the fall of Saigon in spring ‘75. They have an association and web site. They might shed light on Phillips.

“Never recall singing “recon ranger” or even hearing the term. It was always “Airborne Ranger” in the Jody songs that I sang.

I did hear of Remington Rangers. The only time they retreated was when they backspaced. But you would have to remember Remington typewriters for that to make sense.”

Yes, the Army had “Rangers”, and the “Jody” was “Airborne Ranger”. The Marines had “Recon”. I had the honor of supporting Rangers (LRRP) and Marine Recon 69-69 in I Corps.

According to the thread link, he doesn't just claim Vietnam War or era service but "serving in Vietnam."

His actual age together with that troop level chart will indicate whether that claim was likely, unlikely or impossible - irrespective of if he is or is not a vet.
