I’ll confess that when I wrote about the President’s expected immigration and border wall offer this morning I left open the idea that he might declare a national emergency just to throw everyone a curve ball. That didn’t happen. Instead, he went with Option B which I also mentioned. He’s putting a DACA/TPS offer on the table and seemingly daring Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to turn it down. (NBC News)
President Donald Trump proposed a deal to end the government shutdown that continued his demand for $5.7 billion in funding for his border wall, but contained what he suggested was a concession to Democrats: three years of protections for immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children and those who fled certain countries and are covered under the temporary protected status program.
“This plan solves the immediate crisis, and it is a horrible crisis,” Trump said in an address to the nation, delivered from the Diplomatic Room at the White House. “And it provides humanitarian relief, delivers real border security and immediately reopens our federal government.”
Trump said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has agreed to put his proposal into a bill and bring it up on the floor by the end of next week.
Democratic leaders in Congress declared the plan dead on arrival, issuing a spate of statements based on early news reports of what Trump intended to propose.
This looks like The Art of the Deal in action, at least at first glance. I was expecting some sort of deal for the dreamers that gave them permanent legal alien status and perhaps a shot at citizenship after a sufficient period had passed for those currently following legal means to become citizens. Ten years seems about right.
Trump offered less than that. Three years is on the table, along with some other goodies that the Democrats have been asking for. And three years takes them past the next election, so if a Democrat wins the White House they could expand on that as I suggested above. And it would reopen much of the government and put many furloughed workers back on the job. What’s not to like, right?
Supposedly, there’s plenty not to like. Pelosi didn’t even give it a moment’s notice in any serious way.
“It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.”
Now the battle lines have been fully drawn. Trump came to the table and offered some options that Democrats have been pushing for, but not all that they desire. That’s the definition of negotiating. If the new Speaker had come back with a comment about it being “a good starting point” we might have gotten somewhere. But she shut it down cold.
Is that going to tip the blame game? Probably not. John Podhoretz explained why and it once again has to do with how the media will spin the story.
Speech was a fair summary of an offer. Question going forward is if Dems pay because they make no counteroffer. Without media pressure on them maybe not.

As I responded to John, there will be no media pressure. It will simply be “not good enough.” They’ll seek to continue placing the blame on Trump even though he offered a bounty of riches the Dems desired. Pelosi won’t cave on any money for the wall because she believes that her continued leadership in her party depends on defeating Trump rather than getting anything done.
The Shutdown Theater story is far from over I’m afraid. Unless, of course, somebody can put a bug in Pelosi’s ear and get her to come back with a reasonable counteroffer.
I think SCOTUS is supposed to rule on the constitionality of Obamas EO creating DACA. If they rule itwas unconstitutional the DACA kids will be deported. If they rule it was constitutional then Trump has a whole lot of new powers.
You aren't kidding. All over the internet, that's exactly what libs GENUINELY BELIEVE IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN.
They also believe the U S Senate will remove them after the HOR impeaches them at the same time. They are living in la la land.
Time for Trump to Trump the Dems, time to declare a national emergency and build the wall, then layoff about 75% of the government employees. The shutdown is not affecting me.
Trump in interested in action and fixing problems, Pelousy in continued process and fixing the blame.
when is the sotu?
The President will declare a national emergency if the government gets to the point where even with shifting money around it can’t meet it’s obligations.
Yep.
Now Trump can do whatever he wants without much reprocussion
Believe me, watching these ass clowns walk away with $347 in free food while I was standing their with my $8.47 in reduced sale items just pissed me off. Can't wait until this system dies and these aholes have to live like me.
Trump should send a counter Intelligence team to sweep all their offices and download a copy of their PCs. All under the name of Security. Should he find anything, next stop 3 am at their homes for a search. Now declare a national emergency after taking about possible martial law, and order. The Security sweep should include a 90 day FISA to conduct ease dropping if all opposition members of the Congress s are suspected of illegal or treasonous conduct. Simple Jaywalking might be used too.
A reasonable counter offer would be to raise the wall money to 15 billion and then try to improve the DACA/TPS deal.
President Donald J. Trump has Pelousy by the short hairs.
Keep it up and more popcorn, please!
I would enjoy this being the hill Nanzi dies in.
This is what I said in a previous thread:
If the Dems were smart, they would ask for total, unconditional amnesty for all illegals in the U.S. in exchange for immediate border security and provisions such as ending chain migration, birthright citizenship, etc. going forward.
It would be a brilliant tactical move by the Dems.
But I trust POTUS, he knows what he's doing despite the wailing from the likes of Ann Coulter. The Dems want total amnesty and immediate voting from the illegals and that's that.
He’s setting the stage - if the Congress refuses to do its job, we have a true crisis that is worthy of such a declaration...they have the hook in their mouth and he’s gonna set it before too long, but will let it become so obvious that folks will know it had to be done.
Education to, Cali spends $1.8 BILLION ON ILLEGALS EDUCATION alone. Tip of ice berg when you add in the other 49 states.
"Death by a thousand cuts" appears to be the main tactic in play right now.
The rules for a Federal reduction-in-force are very complicated and require 60 days notice to the affected employees. The lawsuits and temporary injunctions forbidding the actions could easily take much longer than that to resolve. It can be done quickly - and has been done before (c.f. USGS shortly after the Oklahoma City bombings). But not this time. There are too many Obama-era judges who are willing to rule against anything that President Trump may do to the Civil Service.
Regrettably, the top-level managers in the Senior Executive Service ranks are exempt from the actions and would be the very last ones to be removed from any department.
But anticipation of the event can often be more stressful than the final occurrence - and may cause greater behavioral changes.
Putting pressure on employees of the FBI, Justice Department, and Homeland Security looks like a fairly clear strategy. Those organizations have engaged in unlawful and seditions actions against the President. Decimating their ranks would be appropriate. Prosecution and jail for a great many of their executives would be well-deserved, although likely out of reach.
Not so clear what the point may be of pressuring the staff in the Department of Interior, the FDA, or the FAA. I would have believed that HHS and the Department of Education would have been better targets. Perhaps the better targets had already managed to secure their funding before the selection started.
