Trump offers immigration compromise to end partial shutdown; Dems cool to offer

President Trump, in a televised White House address Saturday, offered Democrats a compromise package on immigration in an effort to end the nearly monthlong partial government shutdown -- although Democrats dismissed the olive branch as a "non-starter" before Trump even spoke.

Trump announced that he was prepared to back a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as children and were shielded from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, in exchange for the $5.7 billion he has requested for a barrier on the southern border.

"Walls are not immoral," he said, adding that a wall "will save many lives and stop drugs from pouring into our country."

The deal would also extend protections for 300,000 recipients of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program -- which protects immigrants from designated countries with conditions that prevent nationals from returning safely.

"Our immigration system should be a source of pride, not a source of shame," Trump said, urging politicians to "take off their armor" and find solutions.

It would also offer $800 million for drug detection technology to secure ports of entry, 2,750 new border agents and law enforcement professionals, and 75 new immigration judges to reduce the backlog of asylum requests. He said that all his measures have been supported by Democrats before.

He spent much of the address talking about the dangers that an open border presented, describing a "very wide and open gateway for criminals and gang members to enter the United States." However, he also teased the possibility of future, broader immigration reform if his proposals were accepted by Congress.

Trump is whipping them like mules. The Senate will now pass his offer and it drops like a load of bricks on the Pelosi’s head. Hoyer has already caved. He knows the annihilation of his entire party is at risk as they take the side of illiterate rapists and thugs and thieves and illegal aliens.Trump has ALL THE HIGH GROUND NOW. Don’t let trolls here try to separate you from Trump. There are many here for that purpose. Trump only offered work permits and a 3 year extension on Daca on special cases. There are cases where children were brought here that we can live with. NEVER amnesty for their parents. Pelosi is stuck on stupid so Trump declares the Emergency. This is working out great. Not only are the independents shifting to Trump— American Hispanics are now flooding to his side. This is so great.

If they refuse President Trump's offer of compromise their highly emotionally-charged base will hate them for turning their backs on the "Dreamers" (i.e., illegal aliens though they are).

In her universe she has earned the right to enjoy her status. The Democrats voted to put her back in via House takeover as Speaker: The non-voters (all parties) choose to allow a Democrat takeover of the House.

Hopefully the non-voters will pay dearly enough to vote in further elections. Well, hopefully they will vote wisely in further elections.

And, no, not one itty bitty bit of sorrow for the non-essential folks with one exception: Those who voted for the Republican party. They got dragged into the mess. Just hoping THOSE folks start setting funds aside one way or the other, in case of another Federal shutdown. That is if they get back to work.

I think that this pretty well proves that the Democrats do not want a “durable” solution that is not easily dismantled if/when the White House is occupied by a Democrat. As long as there is welfare et al for undocumented non-citizens, our shores continue to be an “attractive nuisance” where soft measures are not effective. Keep the goodies, we need a physical barrier at the most attractive non-traditional points of entry.
